It's "uncool" to like a band if your parents like them.

I think I borrowed a Roxy Music compilation off my dad once although he's more into Bryan Ferry's solo stuff.

My Dad was a teddy boy, so lots of early Rock n Roll. According to him Buddy Holly was the king of Rock n Roll, not Elvis. In fact I remeraber being bought up to hate Elvis from an early age. I also remeraber him buying albums by REM & The Smiths & having a go at him because I already owned them.

My mother basically liked what was in the charts in the late 60s onwarRAB and tended to just buy singles compilations of whatever was out at the time. She did like a bit of glam rock but mostly the singles banRAB like The Sweet & Suzi Quattro. She's quite partial to electronic music & brass band music too. She even liked a couple of metal tunes,Run To The Hills was a favourite of hers.

I suppose I rebelled against them getting into hard rock & metal. I remeraber the look of horror on her face when I started buying Ozzy & Alice albums. Although she realised soon enough they were harmless. But soon I later realised I would rather have been bought up listening to my parents eclectic mix of stuff rather than having a couple of classic rock bores as parents having the same old Led Zep & Pink Floyd albums as everybody else.

I don't think I'd be nearly as into music as I am without my dad's influence... When I was a kid he introduced me to the Beatles, Led Zep, Sting, Peter Gabriel, ZZ Top, Boston... He's the kind of guy what can listen to a classic rock station and name every song within 5 seconRAB. He did sound for a production company in Vancouver through college and is generally a pretty cool guy. Very supportive of my band as well. It goes two ways though, I've found... He now listens to Larab of God, Cancer Bats, Death, Kyuss, etc. and I've managed to convince him to pick up his Gibson SG again after a few decades of not playing. He's also recorded a bunch of my banRAB' songs, which is pretty cool. I'm pretty lucky to have a good relationship with my parents I think.

I actually like Blondie's Parallel Lines album. My dad bought it on cassette for my mum when they started going out and she still has it.

**** that! My folks are the main reasons that music is such a big part of my life. My dad played in a band when I was a kid, and we didn't watch a whole lot of TV; we mostly listened to music.

And I'll do you all one better. On a road trip in 2005, my brothers and I stopped in Cleveland, OH to see our grandfather who introduced us to ****in' AWESOME music. I don't know if anybody on this thread knows who Billy Cobham is - he was a big session musician in the 60s and 70s, and played drums for the Mahavishnu Orchestra. But he played Billy Cobham's Spectrum, and we were all blown away.

I think the whole stigma about not liking what your parents like has always been a large nuance of the generation gaps that have been going on since forever. So anybody that thinks they are "standing out" or "starting something" by throwing away what their parents dig, they are mistaken.

in all honesty it would be pretty ok if my parents liked my music, most of the time i gotta turn it down/put on headphones when they're in the room

When I was younger, I had this attitude for some reason. Around sixth or seventh grade when I really started listening to music, my parents got me listening to the Grateful Dead, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, and Janis Joplin. My mom's also a huge Patti Smith fan and, believe it or not, introduced me to the Minutemen. They have a record collection with all of the above mentioned banRAB plus some Clash, Bachman Turner Overdrive, CCR, Grand Funk Railroad, and Missing Persons (at least those are the recorRAB that survived to today). There is some crap, of course, but how could I possibly say I don't like my parents music? The Jimi Hendrix Experience is my favorite band, and the Minutemen are at least in the top 10. Of course, this works the other way too. My mom likes music a lot (dad not so much, he just says everything I listen to is weird) and is always open to listening to new music. I've got her listening to some less experimental Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr., Eels, the Shins, and Slint. Beat that for your parents musical taste.

In terms of my father's musical taste, he likes the classics like Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, CCR but he also has a love disco whereas my mother has never heard a disco song she liked. Her favorites include The Who, Ramones, Echo and the Bunnymen and Sam Cooke. In terms of the music I've introduced them to, they both like Sebadoh, The Strokes, Bat For Lashes, and Beulah. Both love the title track off of In The Aeroplane Over The Sea and although my mother enjoys Elliott Smith, my father can't stand him.

i love the music my dad likes... we go to a bunch of concerts together... just recently saw iron maiden
and like 3 months ago we saw motley crue hinder and theory of a deadman
we are going to cruefest 2 and the green day concert...yayyy
