It's Star Trek Jim, but not as we know it!

That Sums the new film up. I mean I quite liked it. Good story, some fantastic action sequences, good characters and overall a gritty, well paced re-imagining of Gene Roddenberry's vision... but it wasn't Star Trek.

I admit I'm a good old fashioned Trekkie, I like the Films, and grew up with Star Trek: Next Generation and Voyager but what this film does is take away all the history and makes it's own story.

So it's a wonderful sci fi action film that calls itself "Star Trek" and I did like it, but it's not Star Trek to me.

Any other Trekkies out there feel the same way? :)

It was more Trek than the last two TNG movie efforts that's for sure.

How so? It takes none of the history away at all. You do realise the movie takes place in an alternate timeline. The events we all grew up with still happen/happened, in a different timeline.

To be honest with you no I didn't. I just see the film for what it is, a reimagining of the story, Like the BBC did with Robin Hood, like what they're doing with James Bond. It's like saying "Oi you Trekkies, you can all clear off because we're doing this with Star Trek now. That's what I thought
when they destroyed Vulcan.

Let me say that it was more Star Trek than I thought it was going to be and whilst I did enjoy the film I still find myself thinking... this is not Star Trek as I grew up to know it. :)

Genuine Star Trek ended with Nemesis and Voyager - and even then, it had long turned sour.

The war-loving, uncreative fan boys in charge, not satisfied with extending a good story, now seek only to meddle with what's already been written, adding war, darkness and unintelligence to an originally bright and rosy story.

The new film is just another sad example. :(

We certainly thought it was heading into Star Wars territory for a little while. But I found myself likening Scotty's "pet" to Davros from Doctor Who at one point. :p but such grievances aside it was really good.

Well I loved it.

Of course, it may have helped I knew little about Star Trek until I saw it. But after seeing the movie, I was inspired to go and start watching episodes of the original series, and I adore that, too.

I don't necessarily like one version more than the other. There's no reason why both can't be appreciated for different reasons.

I'm not a 'Trekkie' but when I was a small child the original series was constantly on TV - even though it had been cancelled years previously - and it became my favourite show. The films and spin-off series never grabbed me.

I liked the new film a lot but I had one big problem with it....I just didn't like Kirk. I haven't seen the actor in anything else but whatever else you can say about William Shatner, he did manage to create a very likeable and iconic action hero...whereas Chris Pine's performance irritated me. I think it was mentioned on the commentary that someone to whom the filmmakers showed a version of the film made a similar comment...so maybe it's not just me. The 'alternate timeline' stuff etc didn't bother me at all.

Then obviously you didnt take much notice of what happened in the film then as it was explained on a few occassions that that there was an alternate timeline
due to the Romulans from the future changing past events which created a different future
ie that conversation with
kirk and old Spock about kirks father not dying, the reason kirk joined starfleet and the frienRABhip Kirk and Spock had etc.
And
Vulcan was destoyed to punish old Spock for what happened in the other timelines future.
It all made perfect sense to me.

Exactly, as thats how he's grown up to be due to not have his his father in his life wich is the total opposite to how kirk grew up in the other/original timeline.

The character that irritated me the most in this latest JJ Abrams flick was Scotty, as poorly portrayed by Simon Pegg - now I liked Scotty in the original series and the films, but as depicted here he needed a damn good kicking.

Uhura was pretty bland and uninspiring too in the new flick.

Bones was pretty much perfect, Kirk good and Spock ('new' version) not bad, but Quinto isn't a patch on Nimoy.

I dont know how I feel about it. I've watched it 3 times, I enjoyed it and I liked the new characterisations, but im not sure if it's what I want for trek. I think I need to see more of it before I can decide.

Well I thought I understood the story but I don't mind admitting that I watched it believing it was a whole new re-imaging of the franchise.. new timeline... completely separate to all the previous series and films. That was my minRABet when sitting down to watch the film. Smallville has no relevance to any other superman films and series does it? It stanRAB on it's own and that's how I see Star Trek 2009.

When I first heard the dreaded term "reimagine " I feared the worst, they'd make Spock an emo, Kirk would be all touchy feely and Bones would be a cheerful optimist. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw it and I think they've done a good job with it. Does it feel like Trek? not really but is that such a bad thing? The franchise had become stale under Berman and it needed a kick to get it going again, the direction taken may not be to everyones taste but if they'd carried on as they were the franchise would end up dead and buried.

Nemisis was a terrible, terrible wasted oppertunity. I mean, even the cast at the time of filming should of realised what was happening.

I kind of hopped for one more Next Gen movie at least to somehow reprive that effort. so sad.

so i am guessing Star Trek franchise was dead in the water - and even though i liked the new film - it wasnt Star Trek really was it. and sadly this new continuity and cast is the only way forward now...miss the Next Gen :(

I'm guessing that the films were due for a reboot anyway. There was a certain finality after Nemesis, (which I actually quite enjoyed). Everyone went their seperate ways and Data..... well I won't give too much away there ;)

Star Trek 2009 was much more of an action epic whereas Next Gen movies were expensive extended Next Gen episodes which I was fine with.
