I so appreciate the degree of variance in opinions here. I was curious to know what people thought about this, and I thought it might make for interesting discussion.
Heh, perhaps I should start a blog instead?
Thanks for your answers!

Yes, it is also harmful to the evolution of the human species.

p.s; that said, there's nothing wrong with a bit of hot water.

edit: For the guy rejecting the asker's concept;

Humans are biological organisms which evolve, therefore, by destroying the organisms which live on our skin with chemicals we are altering our evolution.

We are leading ourselves down the path of selective evolution.

depends what your definition of what is "harmful to civilization" is.

I don't think civilization is harmed or helped by the use of anti-bacterial soap, try toning it down a little and stop pretending that a choice of hand soap is going to make civilization fall instead of just changing the number of soap resistent bacteria.

Only in that it reduces your natural immune system and makes one more susceptible to disease.

I did some research on the most common antibacterial agent in soaps, triclosan because a doctor recomended I take it to get rid of a rash. It works very well. I also found that it works great in toothpaste and keeps the toothbrush far more sanitary. I haven't had a single chancre sore in the few years I have used colgate total. According to the research, there is no evidence of any bacteria developing any immunity to it. That is the primary concern. The only other concern would be if it killed bacteria in the environment. I don't think it is that powerful. It has been a huge benefit to my life because that skin infections was really harmful to my self esteem.

There is one thing I noticed many years ago. If you use antibiotics as a deodorant, it will make you dependent on them and cause you to have far worse BO than just soap so I don't use it like that. I know that was probably too much info but I just hoped it might help someone out.

It's harmful to the evolution of our species, but then so are glasses and contact lenses, crutches, computers, cars, etc.
