...another culture? I'm sure that the other players are showing him sympathy now because of the fact that this injury happened to such a nice guy. But when he first came over, did the other players give him a hard time because of the cultural differences? It doesn't seem that NBA culture is usually one of calm, quiet humility.

ive watched him go up against howard the past couple of years and he doesnt need any politeness.
he holds his own fine.
as far as chinese people understanding how the "NBA culture is"
believe it or not they or more die hard fans than we are.
they know just about evrything there is to know about the each individual player....
all the way down to wives names.
China goes insane over the NBA.

here is a stat for you which you. the NBA estimates,
there are as many NBA fans in China as there are people in the USA.
approximently 300 million

I remember Steve Francis was very friendly towards Yao when he first came over. He never made Yao carry his bags (usually rookies carry the veteran players' bags) and never bagged Yao out when he did something wrong on the court. Cat, T-mac, KG, Rudy T and many more are friendly with Yao.

Of course, on the other end of the spectrum, you have absolute low-lives like Stephon Crapbury, Josh Howard and Stuart Scott. Josh Howard always tries to hurt Yao during games. Stuart Scott is just trash, tries way to hard to emphasise anything bad that happens to Yao.

Probably not as much teasing as other players get for any number of things. Men of that age tend to drop a few zingers into each other when they get together, whether they're pro athletes or not. It's kind of a way of saying "You're my friend, and I like you.". If they were overly polite with Yao, he'd have felt like more of an outsider then if they had ribbed him a little.
