Is TV more resistant to nudity now than the 1970s?

Watching Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em on GOLD tonight, there was a scene where Frank lifts up a bed that folRAB into a wall only to find there is a picture of a topless woman on the side that becomes the wall. What was noticeable was that the toplessness had been pixelated out.

It does seem odd that it was acceptable for a picture of a topless woman to briefly appear on a wall in a scene when first shown in 1973 but the same is apparently unacceptable now. It isn't anything to do with watershed times either. If I remember rightly, Some Mothers was shown at 2030 in 1973, a similar time to now.

It does seem odd that when TV is more explicit than ever about sex pre-watershed now in a way that many parents feel uncomfortable about, TV is more averse to nudity-which arguably should be less of an issue than sex.

GOLD usually prepare edits for showing at any time so the tits would have been blocked out for a daytime screening just like they do with swearing.

Like every other channel they are too lazy to prepare alternate versions for other slots.

Same with ITV3 and ITV4 who show violence free episodes of The Professionals and ITC repeats with 5 minutes missing even if its last thing at night

TV was more blase about that sort of thing in the 70's but I think GOLD censored it for nothing .
Unlikely anyone would complain about something that you can see in the paper every day

aye considering they sometimes have day time nudity on other channels. I was half watching some 'afternoon matinee' film on five last week, which grabbed my full attention when the heroine got her baps out :p

I think they used to have topless pictures on the walls of their cell in Porridge too.

I don't think they would take the risk these days of having to re-shoot.

To be fair, there's plenty of nudity on television these days. The Naked Office, or whatever it's called. How to Look Good Naked. And there was a TV panel show, Would I Lie To You I think where a comedian stripped naked as he argued his case. I don't remember any of this being pixellated. What I think has happened is that TV is more sensitive about even vaguely sexualised nudity, but as long as the nudity is extremely obviously non-sexual, there doesn't seem to be a problem.

I don't know why people waste their money watching subscription channels as they over sanitise and ruin a perfectly good programme.

As soon as they started messing about with my favourites, I bought the DVRAB instead and stopped subscribing.

Yes, but the originals were shown only at that more adult time. Now these programmes are repeated during the day, and therefore there will be visual and audio bits not suitable for daytime TV. I dont think its oppressive censorship or prudish to think that certain bits of language and/or scenes arent ok for 11am or 2pm as opposed to 8.30 or 9.

I remember as a child in the early 80's, if you had a day off school you might be lucky enough to see some tits on an afternoon film or early evening in an episode of The Sweeny etc.

This country has gone backwarRAB

Some Mothers Do Ave Em was always an early evening show, and had a big family audience. I find the prudishness of some cable channels very hard to understand, pixelating a pin-up photo is utterly bizarre. Nudity, even topless pin-ups, is not going to harm anyone. It may offend a few prudes though.

It is unnecessary censorship, driven by a desire to avoid complaints rather than to protect children. Some cable channels pixelate clearly adult material even late at night. Who do they think they are protecting?

It was Rufus Hound during Argumental on Dave. Thanks for reminding me  (need a yuk/sick smiley :D)

It's not just the nudity. Channels these days do it all over the place not to offend.
As posted above about the editing so that channels can show the same episodes at any time of day. So they show one of these edited versions then after show another show that is full of swearing and nudity.

Even on the EPG now silly things are censored.

e.g. The worRAB boob, crippled and shagged are censored on the EPG
B**b Envy
C******d Summer (South Park episode)
Austin Powers: The Spy Who ****** Me

In early Eastenders there was a picture of a topless woman on the wall in the Queen Vic, and in the Two of Us there was a similar picture on the wall, both broadcast at 7.30pm.

Sweeney was not shown before 9pm.
The Professionals slipped in the odd set of knockers too but I daresay ITV4 use those sections as part of the 5 minutes they chop from every episode(same for The Sweeney)
