To be techy you can damage a sub both ways but safer to be over rather than under in power.
A voice coil is a COIL and will heat up just like a radiator when an amp that is under powering a sub produces DC Current . Over power produces to much throw on the sub which will make it pop
this can be tuned down/out as the sub can only take the amount of power it needs you can go less gain but an amp that is under powering a sub CAN'T give you more gain .
IF UNDER POWERING DOSE NOT DO DAMAGE THEN WHY DO YOU PEOPLE GO THROUGH SO MANY SUBS ?????????????

dude listen carefully,i have been in2 dis stuff for a long time.
If ur amp is underpowered it will cause distortion at high volume levels and if it is overpowered it will not but taking a sub to its max wid a overpowered amp vil make it move more than its capacity 2 move n if it is not a good quality sub its coil and its cone will be burnt n torn respectively.
Da safest bet for every car is 2 have atleast 2 subs and if they have a lil underpowered amp it wudnt b bad.If u have 2 subs den d stress of producing sub-bass frequency r distributed n does not take d sub to its performance end.
