Is this part of hockey culture or Canadian culture?

I can't believe I didn't notice this by now, but around the league players and coaches create nicknames in exactly the same way. For example:

Ovechkin - Ovie
Varlamov - Varly
Arnott - Arnie
Legwand - Leggy (haha)

So I ask, is this a hockey thing or Canadian thing?

BQ: How would you describe the Canadian accent? Hearing Canadian coaches and players speak around the league, there's a distinct way that they talk. Even Barry Melrose has it.
I don't look down on Canadians' style of speaking; I actually find it endearing. I would describe it as 'flowing.'
