do straight guys say ciao bello to each other. my boyfriend has a new friend, and he wasnt sure where the boundaries lye. should he consider that to be slipping over the line? or is it a cultural buddy man thing?
 
That would not be appropriate unless you were trying to be funny with someone you knew very well. It would be like saying "bye handsome" to someone in the US. Most Italian men would take great offense. Just say ciao.
 
It's cool, yes guys say that... commenting on whether someone is handsome is very acceptable. If your boyfriend has a problem with it, ask the Italian friend, who is most likely straighter than your boyfriend ;-)
