IS there such thing as a break in period for subwoofers ?

I got the MTX Magnum MB212P Package 1000 Watt System The sub enclosure comes preloaded with two 4 ohm 12 inch subs which are pre-wired (at 2 ohms) And An amp. I have had them since December of 2008 Today i realized that they sound a lot better and louder. After a while of using it everyday will it start to sound better and be able to handle louder music without distortion. How does the break in period work and how long does the whole process take or is it an on going thing the more you use them the better they get.
