...and religions? In some religions you are not allowed to touch a holy book, pray or even enter a house of prayer if you are menstruating. I have a hard time accepting any explanations or justifications for that, aside from it being pure misogyny.
Is menstruation often seen as dirty, unsanitary, filthy, shameful, immoral and sinful because of an underlying misogyny, a hatred and fear of women? In primitive cultures, menstruation was often revered and celebrated, because it signified that a woman was fertile, and fertility was the most important factor when it came to survival. In more advanced cultures with complex rules in society and religion, menstruation was (and still is) often vilified. Why is that?
edit: *house of worship
Gunter, when a woman is not menstruating that means she is either pregnant (and not fertile), past her childbearing age, or just not fertile in general. Ovulation is not possible without menstruation. Pregnancy is not possible without ovulation.
CAustin, you can take a shit in any house of worship you want, you can take a shit and then touch a holy book, pray or participate in religious activities. Defecating has no reproductive function, an accurate comparison would be being barred from entry into a house of worship if you had ejaculated semen that day.
You're a smart guy CAustin, but sometimes you are arrogant enough to say stupid things.
Sheba Jack, are you Muslim? Did you sit on the sidelines in Muslim Sunday school, being singled out as a 13 year old girl who had her period, not being allowed to pray? Muslims follow both the Quran and Hadiths. The Quran is disorganized and often ambiguous. The Hadiths are more detailed and instructional. Most Muslims regard women to be unclean during menstruation... she is not to touch the Quran, pray, fast or have sex, because she is considered impure until she takes a religious purifying bath, which relieves her of her impurities, i.e. her menstruation.
