I don't know. Perhaps some of the other women prefered being whipped to having to go to jail for a month. Only they can say. I would have to have some knowledge of what Sudanese jails were like before I could express an opinion.

It seems less humiliating to me but it is still very wrong to jail her.
I feel frustrated when I hear of male politicians legislating what a woman should wear ...it's bizarre. Laws are for the protection of the people, not for creating fear by perverse, excessive violence toward them.

All over the world there are men fighting about what women should or shouldn't wear. In one country they get so red and angry when they see a woman in a hijab having a picnic with her children, and in another a woman wearing trousers will cause national upheaval. They try to tell us its Dangerous.

This incident may be a win but it may be a way of deflating the anger of the people so they can keep control over them ...we are on the wrong side of a very steep mountain and only time will tell if we have taken the first step )c:

win for women's rights? She's not getting 40 lashes from a camel rope whip now, she's only facing a fine or a month in jail. I think that's good, but then again no laws have been changed and 10 other women who were arrested with her at the time had pleaded guilty and been whipped. So do you view this incident a win in the end?

The woman involved in the Sudan trouser case asked for her UN status to be ignored when deciding on her sentence, so I think she, along with the other women who were sentenced, were very brave, to challenge something that seems so minor to other cultures, but is still important to some muslim cultures. Any time the status quo is questioned, it is a win, even if laws aren't changed now, these women have been made martyr's by their government, and even if it seems minor, sometimes, all it takes are a few ppl to create a small ripple of dissension, that can become a massive wave of cultural change, in the future. Sometimes, just knowing others question authority, is very shocking and unsettling and can lead to ppl questioning all sorts of customs and laws.
