Is Spiro dangerous to take? I've been reading about it because I have very oily skin and mild acne and am interested in taking it. I'm worried about it being carcinogenic, affecting organs such as the liver and kidneys, and causing problems with the heart.

It's not known to be carcinogenic in humans there have been studies in lab rats that showed some signs. Its much safer than Accutane and far less side effects for me. Some things to consider are that it does mess with your period, if your not on birth control then it may cause irregular bleeding. I have always been on the pill while taking it so I never experianced that. It is also a blood pressure pill so if you have normal Blood pressure you want to keep an eye on it to make sure your not getting too low. Its up to you really of all the drugs for acne it's the one with the least side effects in my opinion. I've tried two types of antibiotics both gave me chronic yeast infection and did not clear my acne. I also tried accutane which cleared me while I took it but my acne came back a few months after stopping and accutane caused muscle pain/weakness, dry skin/lips, frequent nose bleeRAB and dry eyes.

cakies, did you have to watch your salt intake and did you get headaches? What dosage were you on and what type of bc too. are you still on it and if not then did your acne come back?

I take 150mg. Im on Yasmin birth control. I meant that it LOWERS blood pressure so no I never worried about my salt intake, My BP run 110 over 70 without the spiro and 100 over 60 with it so I had low BP in the first place, my doctors were constantly checking it to make sure I wasn't too low. I have had migranes since the age of 12 and I can't say spiro made them worse or better just the same. Also, remeraber if you go on it to tell every doctor you go to that u take it. I did not tell my neurologist and he gave me propranilol(sp?) to prevent migranes which also lowers BP and I passed out cuz of low BP. This wasn't spiro's fault it was mine for forgetting to tell my doctor I was on it and then taking a med that lowers BP even more. I haven't stopped taking it so I don't know how my acne would respond if I did.

cakies, my niece just upped her spiro to 150mgs from 100mgs and has intense sinus pressure in her forehead and the left side of her head. She is worried about this and has dropped back to 100mgs the past 2 days, She tryed the 150 for four days and then this happened. we don't know what this is from. can you help? she has been on spiro for 2 months and still has some breakout.

sorry I can't help you much, I never had headaches from spiro but I've been on meRAB to prevent migranes since long before I even started spiro so maybe that has been a factor. Her headaches do not sound like migranes. Maybe she should stick with 100mgs. Did 100mgs help at all? Is she on a birth control pill? I've heard women complain of headaches from birth control pill maybe thats effecting her. Another factor is dehydration, Spriro is a duretic and she neeRAB to make sure she drinks alot of water, plain water or gatorade Not soda, sugary juice etc. to make up for the fluid she's losing. I hope she feels better.

thanks cakies, she still has pimples on 100mgs but its only been 2 months. were you clear on 100? I think it was really a sinus pain but i think that not drinking enough water could dry out her sinus. Did you feel anything on 150mg? she is on yaz and spiro. she has been on this all together for 2 mon. she is supposed to be on 200 mgs to help but she started slowly. her doctor said that would make her skin beautiful and clear up completely. he also said it would make her look young always. why? I have no clue. she is also worried about her libido too. anyway, the yaz has really made her happy and that's a blessing. the horror stories i have read are frightening. thanks for any help you can suggest.:)
