Is my amp to powerful for my subwoofer?

I have a 15inch Memphis audio, 500w max 250 continuous wattage, and my amp is a MTX thunder 1000w. Is this bad for my sub or will it overpower and blow it. Also i'm wondering if i just turn the levels on my amp almost all the way down does it still deliver full wattage. So can I run my 1000w amp on one 500w sub. I also have a 300w pioneer amp but i'm not sure which one to run the sub off of....thanks
 
Well you could but you got to give more detail. But you could if that amplifier you have is rated for one channel 500w with 250rms, then yes it could run it perfectly. Just on one channel tho.
 
if the pioneer is 300w continuous. use it. if its not and the 1000w mtx is continuous. use it very very low. and see if you can make the mtx amp less watts by making it a 4 ohm load. which would theoretically make it 500 watts. the rms wattage is what makes a huge difference. take it to a professional. and they can wire it up correctly so you dont hurt the sub.

here is how i was told to set up my amp.us the mtx hook every thing up turn the gain right down on the mtx amp then go to the head unit turn it up 3/4 up then go back to the amp turn up your gain tell your sub starts to distort then stop now turn it back un til stops distorting that way you now that the sub is getting what it needs and you won't be under powering or over powering your sub
