I'm a proud Filipino American and it's not that I don't get along w. every Filipino, I just find it difficult due to cultural traits and upbringing. Before anything, I'm not stating that I'm better or worse than anyone nor am I pointing out one culture is a specific defintion - this is me "generally speaking" of the culture and I know that no matter what race, not everyone is the same. So please, don't be offended, sorry to be blunt at times but I write this with love and respect:
I grew up in a predominantly white community. I went to private school where I was one of the 4 other asian kids fr. K-8 grade. I wasn't exposed to many Filipinos but my parents enriched us with alot of culture. It wasn't until high school and college was when I started to be around Filipinos and to this day, I still find it somewhat "weird". I know people that are "half and half" of 2 different cultures feel this way in which both sides of their parents' culture make them choose which one they're "more of". When I was becoming to be part of a Filipino community or have friends, I was told I was "whitewashed" - which I don't see is a bad thing. I know my heart is full of love for my culture and that's what matters. I find it difficult now b/c there are certain Filipino traits that are hard to deal when it comes to people. Filipinos (NOT ALL) tend to have crab mentality - everyone's always competing w. one another and trying to outdo the person next to them. My filipino girl friends are like this and also get very jealous easily, insecure, and DRAMATIC. They take things personally and get offended very easily and rather than confronting the situation, they stay quiet and talk behind your back...and gossip about it w. other people. Don't get me wrong, this happens to all different cultures - black, white, hispanic - everyone goes through this but I find it common now that these cultural traits are very dominant in Filipino culture and I'm wondering if it has anything to do w. my upbringing. I admit, i'm no angel and i'm human, i make mistakes and am just as guilty as the next person but I don't have these mentalities and it makes me somewhat sad that I can't really "get along" w. Filipino people.
What do you think?
You guys are more than great with your answers and I appreciate it - thank you so much! Also, I'd like to add, (i'm probably stereotyping) but I'm starting to "dislike" Filipinos b/c of these traits...I still got love but...ehh...
