live in accepts certain words? I'm not referring to taking the Lord's name in vain by exclaiming "Oh, my God!" in everyday situations or using Jesus' name as a curse instead of a blessing which is common amongst unbelievers. I'm referring about everyday words and expressions that may be the norm in your society or used regularly in you place of work, but that my upset more sensitive souls.

Have you ever stopped to think why people use bad or foul language?

Ephesians 4:29 says nothing unwholesome should come out of our mouths. Why? What damage do Christians do when they use bad language and how do non-Christians view us when we use words in anger?
 
I'll start by saying, this is just my opinion. I think that as Christians, it is our duty to set ourselves apart from non believers by the way we act. Non Christians should be able to see the way we live our every day lives, observe our attitudes, and the way we approach situations, and see that we do it differently than the rest of the world. And, our goal is for them to want what we have. I think that if they see us living and acting like the rest of the world, they'll think that we're no different from them, and they won't see the joy that salvation brings to us.
 
The world would be a much better place if people could refrain from saying things that are regrettable. Whether we believe or not, there is nothing but negative energy that comes from words spoken in anger. Sometimes we need to bite our tongue, but it is human nature to let a few bad words slip now and then, it relieves some of the stress, as long as we keep it in check.
 
The bible is more or less a set guide lines for christians. When it was written they tried to write guidelines that people would follow to make them peaceful and to set an example to other faiths. No swearing, don't cheat, don't be jealous...the list goes on. Unfortunately some do not follow these anymore. They feel that they are outdated. To answer your question, however, it is not permissible. A person does not need permission to use foul language; they simply do it anyway. We have a set of "rules" to live by; it's your choice to follow them or not. That is the beauty of God; he gives us the choice. It's up to you to determine what is right and wrong.
 
i try not to say swear words because i know that God does not like it and i also do not want my children to think it is ok to say them. but they do slip out sometimes. like when i hit my thumb with a hammer.
 
Apparently, it's the devil who makes us swear, or get into the habit of swearing.

So I guess every time you do it, just quickly remind yourself not to and ask the Lord's forgiveness. Soon you will develop good habits.

But I think remember not to reprimand those who do swear because it's for God to judge at the end. Just lead by example.
 
It is my understanding that profanities of the English-language sort do not exist in many languages. Words are just words. If I say "defecate" or "poop" or "s***", is God keeping a scorecard in heaven regarding which term I use?

Many Christians use euphemisms of curse words like "Darn" and "shoot" and "fudge." I find such euphemisms laughable.

Christians: Is your God really so uptight about words which do not harm other people? I can see wanting to avoid offending some people unnecessarily, but I think that the people who get offended need to lighten up. Many words are common among Christians now that wouldn't have been used by most Christians forty years ago (Like, "that sucks" or "I'm pissed off." or "big-ass"). Why get so hung up on fluid language?
 
any swear word is bad.

Matt. 5:37 But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.
 
you don't stand out from the crowd. By not swearing, you are truly different. Non-Christians will notice that, and most will respect it.
 
it is a tradition of men to condemn unsaved for cussing in public.

there is biblical references to good communication being defiled by bad language.

however, Jesus condemned people who swallow camels and choke on gnats.

using good language is for saints and educated people. it is not for educated people to condemn the unsaved soley on the basis of what words they use.
pluck out the beam which is YOUR OWN eyes before you pluck it out of the unsaved especially if they do not want to be saved.

in this manner of self-righteousness and piousness, more christians become the HYPOCRITEs that jesus condemned in the name of resisting the chief priests and the lawyers and pharisees.

i have tried in times past to answer this question but it becomes the traditions and practice of men to cause hatred and division among anyone who is NOT the same denomination as their own, but in reality Their denominations is the same as the pharisees.
 
People should be able to control themselves and the words that come out of their mouths, regardless of what is the "norm" of society. Who says we have to follow what everyone else does, especially if it is against God's will?
 
Humans give power to words, not God.

Words are fiction. We give power to them, but they don't exist in the physical world.

Bad language is just a set of words that indicate frustration. We give those words that power.

EDIT: That aside, incessant swearing is just considered undignified in our society. I don't think it's sinful though.
 
James the brother of Jesus tells us:
Jas 3:2 For in many things we all stumble. If any stumbleth not in word, the same is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body also.
Jas 3:3 Now if we put the horses` bridles into their mouths that they may obey us, we turn about their whole body also.
Jas 3:4 Behold, the ships also, though they are so great and are driven by rough winds, are yet turned about by a very small rudder, whither the impulse of the steersman willeth.
Jas 3:5 So the tongue also is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how much wood is kindled by how small a fire!
Jas 3:6 And the tongue is a fire: the world of iniquity among our members is the tongue, which defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the wheel of nature, and is set on fire by hell.
Jas 3:7 For every kind of beasts and birds, of creeping things and things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed by mankind.
Jas 3:8 But the tongue can no man tame; [it is] a restless evil, [it is] full of deadly poison.
 
In truth, no. In reality, I will be the first to admit that when I get really angry, I use bad language. After I do, I pray for forgiveness. Hence the saying that we, as Christians, aren't perfect. We are forgiven.
