Is it illegal for an employer to discuss medical and work status with other employees?

If so where can I find the information? I have searched the HIPPA website without any luck...

Not exactly. They can discuss what is necessary to complete the duties needed. This is NOT covered by HIPAA (which ONLY refers to medical treatment facilities/clinicians). This is covered by regular employment laws, both state and federal. If you feel your privacy was violated and you have been damaged by it, go see an attorney about this. Many will give an initial consultation for free.

HIPAA law is relevant to health care providers.. meaning, it is illegal for doctors or hospitals to release that info. This would not include your insurance company.. obviously, if you want your insurance to pay, it implies consent.
Nothing in HIPAA is concerning your employer. All of that would come under labor/ privacy laws or company policies.

It is illegal to share private info with other employees. Check into the Labor Relations Board in your state.
