Is it a culture difference or is someone wrong?

I don't understand why my family says that my son is my cousin's nephew, but other people not in my family say he's my cousin's "first cousin once removed" can someone explain to me who's right and who's wrong?

We're Hispanic so maybe it's a latin thing...
