is giving back to the community and giving poor families food, shelter, and education, socialist?what about public school systems, equal opportunities for all?im confused....obviously total socialism is bad.but some socialism is good.then why is it such a bad term?

It became a bad term because that's what fiscal conservatives want you to think

NO thats charity -- socialism is the government giving u ur home, ur job, ur food, ur education, ur health carte -- its the government being ur mommie and daddie f o r e v e r

No. Charity is a beautiful thing.BUT WHEN it becomes MANDATED BY LAW.... and FORCED upon you through law and/or higher taxes.....It STOPS being "charity" and becomes SOCIALISM.

As in you physically donating... as in you have control over how much and what to donate?... No, that is not socialism that is charity... Big difference... Socialism is a government tries to be utopian and solve everyones problems by sticking their hands in everything... from nationalizing companies to creating nanny laws to taxing people into "charities"....Future Fate, most Christians have no problem giving to people what they need... whether it's money to pay their bills, a bag of groceries or clothes off their back... It becomes a problem when the Government forces us by taxing us for welfare and medicaid.... I have been in many churches (mostly small poor churches) that did everything in their power to keep their Pantry ministry going (it's where we give people a bag of food) and to give people checks to pay their utilities for the month....

Do it on your own with your own money and I donate to charities and I DO NOT WANT the government distributing my money and if you worked for a living you would not want it either unless you are just a totally blind ideologue

When you donate by your own choice it is charity. When the government takes your money at gunpoint and makes the decision who to give it to then that's socialism.Generosity should be a choice.Socialism has failed everywhere it is tried because it requires that a politician makes the decision of how much you make. Making everyone equally miserable is all it's ever done. Taking freedoms away is its goal.

All Socialism is bad. This is why both sides are constantly worried about the slippery slope. You allow one Socialist program, and people use it as an excuse to add more to our taxes.Public school is a bad idea. It teaches children what the government wants them to learn - not how to think for themselves.Giving to charity on your own is a good thing. Having the government steal your money, keep a large portion, and then dribble it back to the people THEY consider to be needy is a bad thing..

Donating your own money to the homeless is charity. The government taking it from you and giving it to them is socialism.

Giving or donating time money etc. is not socialism because it is VOLUNTARY! Taxing someone and giving it to the causes you mentioned is socialism because it is CONFISCATORY! The money is taken from a person.

I don't agree with total socialism but I think this immature attitude of demonizing the word is ridiculous. Socialism is not good or bad... it is just what it is. Every western democracy uses some forms of socialism... and ALL of us benefit from these socialist programs (Welfare, USPS, the armed forces, VA healthcare system, to name a few). Now, I don't want the airlines government owned or the auto industry socialized but I think we can live with a balance of socialistic programs in a democracy... we already do.

its all a matter of degree. when the State does it its socialism, when private citizens do it its 'philanthropy'.

Don't let anyone tell you what to believe, if you believe in socialism than do, but do not feel like you are obligated to believe in any pre determined way of life. That after all is almost a dictatorship of one's mind.

Socialism is the government needs to take care of everyone.Capitalism limited government, people donate themselves. We are about Liberty, wich can mean equal oppertunity but does not mean equal success (or reward). Each man/women having the opertunity to rise to their own level of abilities.Socialism means equal success (or reward)

The Republicans in this forum probably think so.The Republicans blame the homeless for being homeless, regardless of their circumstances.

Because until you live with it, under it, it all sounds cushy. Government provision is ok on an as needed basis, to provide to those who by no fault of their own cannot provide for themselves, but no good comes of an all powerful government. It just doesn't.

No, it's charity, a matter of personal choice. When you take a book out a library, is that socialism ? Technically yes, as the state has provided the means for you to enjoy reading, paid for by taxes which everyone has to contribute, and if the state provided your education, that's socialism too.Too often it's defined as a dirty word in the U.S. because thats what they want you to think. There's a world of difference between having a few socialist policies and living in a purely socialist state.I live in the UK, a capitalist country that is able to provide health care for all and a state pension, by the payment of national insurance contributions. I still have the option to take private health care or personal pension plan if I want to. Doesn't mean I'm goose-stepping under a red flag.Thumbing me down doesn't change facts. Personally I'm glad I live in a country that can provide health care for all, instead of just for a lucky few that can afford it. I do hope the tumb-downers never get stricken by an illness that prevents them from ever working again. Otherwise, in their purely captialist ideal, they'd be left to die in the street.

Donating is one thing. A donation is where someone VOLUNTARILY gives of their own free will.Government mandated re-distribution of wealth is entirely different. The government TAKES by force of the penaly of law.

Socialism is a form of government in which people are cared from cradle to grave. They depend on the government for all things, food, housing, medicine, education, etc and in exchange the government takes the vast majority of money in order to keep every person at an equal social level. If you choose to donate money to help any charity that you wish this is a component of capitalism because YOU choose how you spend YOUR money.Socialism is being tossed around now because obama's plans include increasing the number of people on some form of government aid from 33% to over 58%. At the same time he wants to expand the powers of the government over people's lives.Since this is a capitalistic country, imposing socialism policies is a bad idea. You can't have two competing systems of government.
