is entertainment not culture? surely cinema has always been used for entertainment, thats its very purpose, if it wan't entertaining then it wouldn't have been popular.

So yes cinema is still a form of culture because it is entertainment and what is shown on the cinema is modern culture

A bit of both really if u look you'll find the mind blowing action super movies that look great on the big screen.
Look again and you find the movies with the undertone of alot of what is happening in society today.
most movies are messages mirrored by serious elements of society but presented to the audience through an entertainment factor.
it depends on the person watching the movie and how there perception of the film is.
some people watch x men and see action but some people watch it and see homosexuality the whole thing of people being different and being trated horribly because their different.
people watched pleasantville and saw comedy while others saw racism. It all depends on peoples perception and what they look for in films.

cinema is too vague of a term. there are two types of cinema, movies and films. movies are usually studio features meant to entertain the masses such as The Dark Knight, Spiderman, and so on. Films are usually much more complex and independent a.k.a "indies."

Movies are for entertainment and films are an art form. if you are looking for some culture, hit up some film festivals such as Tribeca and Sundance. they have some great films never released in theaters nationwide because they contain more than just explosions and mindless violence. (although, there's nothing wrong with a good action movie either)

what is this a homework question?

since your screenname is pirates of the caribbean I don't think you're very appreciative of the real cinematic culture.

culture and entertainment can't be easily distinguished. Mass entertainment - a film like Aliens V Monsters - is part of our culture and part of the history of cinema.
If you take culture to mean 'high brow' or 'art' then yes cinema is still relevant and exciting and thought provoking. I saw 'My Winnipeg' last year. It made me laugh out loud but it's an intellectual art film. I think though that studios and financiers are less willing to take chances on intellectual films than they were in the 70's so there are less edgy films and more films with mass appeal.
