I am buying my first bike in over 20 years. Is a HD worth the extra money for the Harley mystique over a Yamaha Road Star or any other import?

Absolutely. When you consider the value you get for the price you pay, you are getting a much better deal with a Harley. Go to NADA website or Kelley Blue Book and look up used values for the last few years and you will see that H-D keeps their value much better than any other motor vehicle - cars, trucks, motorcycles included. Another thing you can't figure into the price is the strength of the dealer network and that you become a part of a family when you buy a H-D. No matter where you go, there is a H-D dealership close. You have friends where ever you go. Harley owners always look out for each other - if you break down, there will be H-D's pulling over to make sure you get the help you need. Then there is the Harley Owners Group (HOG) that is the largest factory sponsored owners group in the world. Earlier in my riding career, I rode with a few groups and I was riding Kawasaki's and Hondas. If someone wasn't able to keep up with the group, they were simply left behind. I have never seen that with my Harley rider groups. There is a sense of pride that comes with Harley ownership that is beyond any price. When you are rumbling through town or out on the open road, people look at you go by. There are Harley haters and I am sure you will hear from them, but it all comes down to this: they are squawking because they are JEALOUS!

H-D's reliability has vastly improved since the Evo engine came out. I did 5000 miles one summer on an 11-year-old Suzuki Intruder, and swore by Suzukis. That was in '97, my last big ride. I bought an H-D XL 883 a few months ago, and love it. Taking it on a +3000 mile road trip in the fall. No mystique about it. And no jap bike has that Harley sound.

alot of that depends on you and what you want out of riding .they both are generic bikes on the show room floor . i work on both types i see the pro's and con's and the list is endless it all goes down to what YOU want. do you plan on adding alot of money to it in chrome? both bikes can go well over 100k. your less opt to open the motor on a jap bike where as a harley almost everyone has got bigger pistons head work cams.
