Jon Favreau signed on the contract to direct Iron Man the long-awaited film adaptation of the Marvel comic. Arthur Marcum and Matt Holloway ("Convoy") will write the film, which was originally set up at New Line with Nick Cassavettes (

Iron Man always been rumored to be Tom Cruise.

Captain America would be good, Brad Pitt would do.

Thor! oh yes that will be good but who will play him!!!

It does concern me a little that he makes a statement about CGI and not using it so much. Surely His first step should be to find out what is possible and not discount anything.
I think Iron Man will need a good amount of CGI. I don't know how else they're going to get across all that 'futuristic' technology, flying scenes, ect.

Jon Favreau has been talking about the Iron Man movie on his MySpace blog:

"Iron Man will indeed be my next movie. Marvel is distributing it through Paramount which, for those of you playing at home, is also the studio that is developing John Carter of Mars. That project is still a huge priority for me and I am still very much attached to it both as a director and producer.

Iron Man is the first Marvel production under its new distribution arrangement. My hope is that this will be reflected in the quality of the movie. Their films are self-financed and, as a result, don't have to run the typical creative gauntlet of studio development. What Marvel says, goes.

As far as specifics, it will be set in the present and, as you would probably expect, includes a version of the origin story.

I have set up a MySpace discussion group. I will post new info there as things come together. The internet is full of faulty info. I wanted to have at least one place where the facts would be correct"

John Favreau has been talking some more on about Iron Man to Superherohype:

""It's the first movie Marvel is self-financing," he said of a new deal that frees the makers of the "Spider-Man" and "X-Men" movies from studio control. "We're set to come out in the summer of '08, and we'll start shooting in January."

"We're gonna have it take place in the present day, but there will be an origin story that has the old, gray Iron Man suit; eventually it will progress into more of the modern look," Favreau said. "That's the fun of doing the first one."

"The alcoholism doesn't come into play until later on in the story of Iron Man," he said. "[The comic] started off in the '60s, where it was about him as a successful manufacturer who developed this suit. Then, later, it spins off into that story about him fighting against himself. I think we're going to lay the groundwork for it, but the first one's going to explore him taking on this alter ego of Iron Man, and developing the suit, and what happens politically within the Stark Corporation."

Mentioning an eventual "Iron Man 2," Favreau said that actor playing Tony Stark for his franchise is unlikely to be a major star (Tom Cruise was briefly attached to the role years ago). Instead, the director hopes to announce his discovery of a relative unknown from the Brandon Routh ("Superman Returns") mold later this year."

So looks like we wont see Tom Cruise as Tony Stark in Iron Man when it is released!

The best story's about IM had also to do with alcholism. That was the character's weakness. He's a playboy genius who likes to drink.

The Invincible Iron Man... kinda ironic really.

You're a good source of info for this kind of stuff, aintcha, Motthus? Lol - keep up with good work. Handy for the rest of us who are interested but too lazy to do the ground work!

Yeah thanks I know so here is more info from Jon Favreau blog:

"I'm going to participate in the Marvel panel at Comicon on Saturday. We'll come up with something fun but, keep in mind, we're two years out so don't expect too much.

We've just approved an "Ironworks" tee shirt for the Paramount booth. I guess they're going to have tee shirts with different Paramount movies on them. The Iron Man one is very understated and cool. The numbers will be limited each day, so keep that in mind if you're a swag hag.

All in all, I want to get my feet wet. Next year will be the big one for Iron Man."

Here is the infor from Comic Con about Iron Man:

"Iron Man director Jon Favreau confirmed at the San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday that the villain in the movie will be fan-favorite Mandarin!

The Mandarin is one of the world's greatest scientific geniuses who is seeking world domination. Although The Mandarin has no superhuman powers, he is a superb athlete with tremendous skill in the various martial arts. For weapons, he uses ten rings he wears on his fingers that respond to his mental commanRAB.

Actor-director Jon Favreau ("Elf," "Zathura"), who will helm Iron Man, said he is approaching the project as a series of films and looks to be sticking with an origin tale initially. He shared his thoughts on the version of the Iron Man suit Tony Stark will bring to life. Initially, it will be the gray metal suit, since he builRAB it as a prisoner of war. The more modern red and yellow suit will appear in the film and Favreau aims to make it more of a RoboCop-type feel instead of a Power Ranger-style suit.

"The suit will be more like a weapons platform than a flying suit

Here is an interview with Jon Favreau from Superherohype:

"Superhero Hype!: Nice meeting you after linking to your MySpace page almost every other week.
Jon Favreau: I've seen that. I look at your site.

SHH!: So why did you decide to do an Iron Man movie?
Favreau: Avi [Arad] and I had been talking about working together for a while, since we met on "Daredevil"--I played Foggy--and I sort of became a director and we always got on very well. I don't know if you've spent any time with Avi, but he's really a salesman at heart. He just has a very big personality and he really makes you feel like you're good frienRAB with him, and there are a lot of people who feel like they're good frienRAB with him. He has a tremendous

It looks like Tom Cruise could still be playing Tony Stark if you believe the rumours on Cinescape:

"Scooper Shan wrote me today from the Comic Con with a scoop regarding the possibility of Tom Cruise still being involved in IRON MAN.

Shan wrote:

Hey Guys,

I was at Comic Con on Saturday for the MARVEL Panel. I might even have a scoop for you that WASN'T announced from anyone on the panel. I sat a row behind two of the guys from Paramount - I knew they were from Paramount because they had call sheets, or itineraries of the panel, with Paramount logos all over them and kept mentioning 'the time''.

There was a woman too - and they were talking amongst themselves once the IRON MAN stuff got underway. All I heard was this "I believe Tom Cruise has got it in the bag, yeah". That's what one of them said to the other. I swear. I remember Cruise rumors a few years back about this, but didn't know he still in the mix? I don't know how much these people would know, but I think it's still very interesting nonetheless.

Shan.

Well there you have it! Could Cruise still be involved? If it means anything, Shan is a constant scooper for Cinescape, and not just a random bird flying around my apartment!

Favreau has said that he is looking for a relative unknown for the part, but time will tell. Thanks Shan for the heaRAB up!"

Tom Cruise - isn't stark black?

or is that later on or something - i seem to remember in Secret Wars he was some black dude?

EDIT: mmm just checked wikapedia - that was Rhodes who takes over after Stark - ooops

Funny you should mention that as I saw this on Aintitcool about casting for Iron Man:

"Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with a nice, juicy casting rumor for you folks. A few days ago there was word that reached my ears about the role of Tony Stark in Jon Favreau's IRON MAN being offered to a very interesting actor. The word was that IRON MAN was being offered to HUSTLE & FLOW's Terrence Howard. That rumor was bizarre, yet somehow fitting. In the recent interview I did with Jon Favreau at Comic-Con, he told me that he was looking for a great actor that hadn't hit it huge yet, a name that wouldn't overshadow the title of the film. Howard fit that bill.
So, I checked in with sources deep within Paramount and Marvel to see if I could confirm this weird rumor. Besides having the perfect mustache for the role, I think a lot of fans wouldn't have been able to get around the racial difference, much like they didn't get behind Michael Clarke Duncan as Kingpin in DAREDEVIL.
I finally got one of my sources to tell me that Terrence Howard was indeed offered a role in IRON MAN, but not that of Tony Stark.
Going over my interview again, Favreau listed off a number of IRON MAN regulars who would appear in the film. The obvious conclusion I reached was that Terrence Howard was offered the role of James Rhodes, good friend to Tony Stark and future bearer of the armor and IRON MAN identity. He became known as War Machine after Stark reclaimed the name and suit.
So, that's the word. Terrence Howard has been offered the role of James Rhodes in the IRON MAN film. No guarantee he'll take it, but I think Howard is one of the most interesting actors working in the business today and his presence in the film will only make it better. Especially if we get to see Howard don a super suit in this film (or sequels) and kick some ass. What do you folks think?"

Here is more on the Terance Howard rumour from Superherohype:

"A couple of weeks ago, it was rumored that "Hustle & Flow" star Terrence Howard has been offered the role of James Rhodes in director Jon Favreau's Iron Man, and now he has talked to MTV about it:

"Mayyy-bee," he said about taking the role. "It's something I'm trying to fully consider. Action is a whole 'nother animal. The CGI and special effects, that's a whole 'nother thing. Playing to green screen or blue screen, I've never done that. I want to accomplish it and do it well. I don't want to do anything and not do it well."
