What wins consumer wise ? I'm having a tough time picking between the two since I'm a Blackberry owner myself.

The only thing "business" wise Im concerned about is the mssaging . Other than that I'm fine . What phone would you reccomend to me ? I'm a teen turning 16 soon .

iPhone. Leave the Blackberry for your father, unless, like so many kids, you have to have Blackberry Messenger. Also, a Blackberry is an email machine. That is the main purpose of the device. If you're not there for the email, you don't need a Blackberry.

Seconded. I have a Blackberry 8900, and while it's great for email it's not particularly good for anything else. At 16 I would have wanted games and decent applications on my phone, so it's definitely best to go for the iPhone.

I'm a little confused as to why you're considering the 3GS though. Apple have just released the iPhone 4, and it's not exactly expensive to pick one up on a long-term contract. From what I remember, it's only $100 or so more for the iPhone 4 than it is for the 8GB 3GS.

i'm going from the bb 9000 to the iphone 4. the only thing that i'll miss is bbm. it's nice to keep in touch with friends that easily but gchat will probably make up for 60% of bbm now that it can run in the background.

iPhone is more for apps and multimedia
Blackberry is the best for messaging and calling
I am am owner of an iPhone 4 and bb 9000

I love the games and media on the iPhone (which is the reason I switched to it)
But I love texting, emailing, and bbm on the blackberry
Blackberry just feels more reliable for phone usage

And, if I wanted play games I'd fire up my 360 or PS3 and own the computer..

If I wanted to make a phone call, I'll wait till I get home and use my landline!

See how ridiculous your analogy sounds ?

Who compared playing games on the iphone to PC ?

The iPhone is about an *all in one* device with convenience! It's not replacing your computer, but it's getting there!

Having owned, and still do, BBs.. I'll tell you [OP] to pick the iPhone!

Email - iPhone handles it rather well!! @ 16, you don't really care about MS Exchange email ! And, even if you did, the iPhone does exchange mail very very efficiently!

Messaging - There is a truckload of free/paid apps that handle AIM, MSN, YIM, G-Talk, etc example - Meebo

Camera - the iPhone 4 has an amazing camera!! Video recording quality is truly amazing!

Web Browsing and Touch Screen experience on the iPhone is second to NONE! No Nokia, Google, RIM, Samsung, LG, Palm, SE etc has matched/surpassed this *fluid* touch screen experience yet!

Also, the Antenna issue on the iP4 is quite exaggerated. It does exist, and is a problem when it happens [ usually in low RF areas ], but it's nowhere as widespread as you've heard/read.

The BB, while a great phone and messaging device, is just very BLAH! The web browser on my 8900 makes me wanna smash the damn phone!

At 16, you'll get bored with the BB pretty darn quick but the iP4 will keep you intrigued and excited for a while! Eventually, they all get boring

Right now, and in the foreseeable future, applications will spearhead the mobile market and it's devices. Apart from Android, no one is even remotely close to Apple's App store and it ain't about *fart apps* anymore!

So, it should be the iPhone 4 over the BB, hands down!

Nope. Keep playing games on your iPhone and watch your battery run dry. Soon you won't be able to both play games and makes a call anymore.

Want to play mobile games? Get a Nintendo DS. Or a Sony PSP. Games are still better there. One major reason why iPhone isn't that good for games is that games like good multi button controls that you can feel, and keep your hands away from the screen so you get a full view. So many of the games I see on the iPhone are either simple arcade games, or if they go beyond that, sacrifice part of the screen to embed touch controls, which makes the screen look really small when your hands are not in the way of your view.

Best kind of mobile game platform must have buttons outside of the screen with preferably a touchpad or a trackball.

In any case if you really want App Store games, get an iPod Touch. Then get a Blackberry. That are what teenagers (at least those with rich parents) do nowadays. So they don't miss both their BBM and their iPhone games.

Okay, I agree on games eating up some screen space for controls due to lack of any physical buttons! But, gaming on any phone is casual and not intended to compete with the likes of PC, consoles etc.. which is why I quoted him..

It's a convergence device [kinda like my Nokia N95 was at one point!] and works darn good as such.

An iPod touch with BB would mean carrying two devices which is a huge inconvenience. Battery on the iP4 isn't nearly as bad as on previous generations.

Inconvenient? How? I carry my iPod Touch with 2 Android phones all the time. The iPod Touch is so thin you can put them on your pocket and completely forget about them.

If gaming on any phone is casual then its not important enough that it becomes a primary consideration of buying a device. The Blackberry does have a number of casual games on it, and in some ways, nicer to play because you can use physical buttons and the trackball for them for controls, gives feel and keep the screen from the sight of your fingers.

One reason to choose an iPod Touch over the iPhone is the observation that games somewhat run faster on the iPod Touch than the iPhone. The iPhone has the tendency to downclock the CPU to save battery life. iPod Touch are more gaming optimized and don't have this battery consideration, if the battery runs out, there is no harm done. This is especially in the light that the new iPod Touch runs its A4 full speed like the iPad compared to the IP4 which is downclocked by 20%.

Convergence works when devices are bulky. But divergence walks in when it becomes convenient to carry multiple devices due to these size and thinness of these devices. The iPod Touch is one of these devices.

Another thing. Nothing is a substitute to BBM. Not GTalk, not Yahoo Messenger, Twitter or Facebook. BBM is more accessible in spreading messages, media and pictures to groups of friends faster and more conveniently than any IM and social network I have seen. At least Android has a case of GTalk being absolutely on all the time, but no IM service is s completely on all the time on the iPhone because there is no IM service that is so completely integrated to it.

Carrying two devices is inconvenient. Maybe not for you, but for the general population, it is.

Gaming on the iPhone/iPod is much more fun because of the touch screen fluidity over any BB [haven't used the Torch, so can't comment on that], plus the selection of games available on the App store is light years ahead.

I haven't played with the new iPod Touch with the A4 chip, so I can't compare it with my iP4. However, I see zero difference in the way games run on the iP4 Vs iPod Touch 3rd Gen! Maybe certain games do run a tad bit faster on the iPod, but it's a small sacrifice for carrying, yet again, one device!

BBM is great and I use it on my 8900 and 9700. But AFAIK, the problem with BBM is it doesn't work across platforms. I use MEEBO on the iP4 [ integrates AIM, YIM, MSN, GTalk etc ] and with notifications set to ON, I get messages almost instantly, so I'm not sure what you mean by ' not on all the time'!

I forgot to add this app I've been using for a while.. ' WhatsApp ' It attaches to the phone number [ no PIN required ] and works cross platforms [ BB and iPhone.. coming to Android ]. So, IMO, it'll have a much broader appeal and reach! There is no character limit on sending/receiving messages and the application is, like Meebo, always 'on'.

It doesn't have ' read notifications ' like BBM, but I [and a lot of people I know that use BBM for corporate and personal communication] don't really care much about that feature..

Again, what you're proposing is a pale copy of the original. Those notifications are vital. Another thing, BBM is light overhead on the Blackberry; other "always on IM applications" on other platforms take up juice, with the exception of GTalk on Android.

No PIN required? PIN happens to be the best thing about BBM. When you share a PIN in public, regardless of what forum or social network, it's far better than making either your phone number or your email number in public. After all, PIN number is a PIN number. Its a separate number from the IMEI, emaill address, personal name or identity, or phone number you're forced to share to network with someone.

General population, an iPod Touch is inconvenient? Lol. I see a lot of people with iPod Touch and Blackberries or another smartphone.

What's inconvenient is running out of juice on your iPhone just because you played a bit too much games or watched too much media. An iPod Touch is that thin its so thin it puts the thinnest smartphones to shame.

MEEBO or any other IM uses all these Yahoo, AIM, MSN, GTalk, and is just that, messaging. BBM is more than a messenger, its actually a social networking service. I put a picture on it, everyone is notified and can see it easily. That's why it beats MMS, Facebook, whatever when it comes to media sharing.

IPhone blows when it comes to storing media, limited to 32gb. Why? Because if you're downloading video files off from iTunes, it comes on a format where 30 minutes roughly takes up 250mb of something, as compared to RMVB where it would only take up 80mb. You start buying shows, and you run out quickly. You don't have that problem on the iPod Touch which tops at 64gb, where mine currently has about 54gb filled.

Another thing, this one is situational in Asia. In many Asian countries, they got cheap BIS only, no web data plans in many carriers. Think about 10 bucks, you get BBM, push email, Twitter and Facebook, but no web, which you can easily get through a wifi hotspot. Compare that to full fledged data plans required with an iPhone. So people with a Curve and an iPod Touch can get away with a very cheap running cost, and still get connected.
