+ iPhone! What is so great about?

Personally I think it does look rather nice.

I doubt I'll be getting on in the near future though, for the following reasons:

I am on T-Mobile
I plan on moving to another country soon
No mention of a GPS
2MP camera!?
Looks a bit bulky

Who knows though? I may pick one up to play with for a little while and then sell.

For the record, I am to a small degree playing devil's advocate here so please bare with me....

1) So are you saying that if it won't sync to outlook it's not a smart phone? Apple offers there version of outlook and it was mentioned in the keynote. Plus it also allows you to sync all your other important info like contacts and media. It's also the first (smart) phone to be able to select what voicemail you want to hear first without the need to listen to 5 other messages first, That seems pretty smart to me, find me a symbian that offers that as a feature (carrier dependent or not)

2) Give it time, Im sure this is just a formality. As I have mentioned in previous posts, It's just a matter of time before there is a work around to this issue (assuming that it doesn't already)

3) Same as above, though Im sure that apple will offer this as a "add on" of some type.

4) The phone supports wifi with full html web browsing, What more do you want?

To say that a phone isn't a "smart Phone" because it doesn't support 3rd party apps is silly. And to think that Apple didn't have the foresight to realize this was a important factor to many I think is a mistake. Are Apple computers not a "smart" computer simply because they dont support 3rd party apps? Of course not, The same would apply to there phone. Now with that said, If 6-8 months from now there is nothing being offered either through Apple or 3rd party I will gladly eat my words. But until that day comes.....

Again, I will reinerate that I always have and always will be a hardcore symbian power user/Nokia fanboy but lets not disreguard a highly innovative and, at least IMHO smart phone that may make other manufactures rethink the products they offer and come out with newer and more innovative product.

Are you sure? What if Holy Steve decides that you don't need for e.g. Messenger client on your phone? And for some strange reason you do?

1) I dont use apple software, so couldnt care less if it works with apple software. Its possible for any phone to select voicemail messages, its entirely network dependent. Apple have only made an issue of it because its a novelty in the US (apparently).
2)3) Eventually yes, but how long?
4) Its not 3G, without 3G its useless to me. Wifi is a bonus, 3G is essential.

As I've said in the other thread, this is NOT a smartphone. Apple confirmed that it will be restricted, just like the iPod is. There is no public API, no 3rd party apps will be allowed, syncing can only be done on the proprietary dock and not via wi-fi or EDGE, no version will be made unbranded and it will be tied to the carrier. Basically a dumb phone with a nice interface and some extra Internet applications.

I already had to change my sig to reflect the current madness. I just hope there are this many threads in the S60 forum about the pinko when it's announced!

Apple's computers do support 3rd party apps.

I was excited about the iphone at first because I have a background in cocoa the OS X development framework.

I read one hundred articles, chk specification, keynotes, watch videos and I still think its Nothing!!! Please answer on my few very simple questions from this article? Please! It isn?t even a smart phone, its just a damn dummy phone, smart OS indeed, but dumb GUI! Are you really ready to live with keypad and use it as the first phone in daily life!?

Apart from being a multimedia computers, a symbian devices are 1st of all a great phones! I don'twant to change that for a strange and sensitve device with thouch screen no keypad 3.5 inch device just to impress my friends !

To be honest its sahme to compare such phone with powerfull smartphone maschine like the Nokia N95 is, N95 is few light years away in specs compared to this fancy phone that is just designed for the millions of users allready accustomed to dumb ipod devices!

But from other side its just my opinion, maybe I am toooooo subjective, but than lest talk about damn FACTS:

Have you used a Mac before? They run 3rd party apps! This phone doesnt and therefore is a clowed environment, which means no choice and limited options. I dont pay $1,000 for a phone that I cant run whatever software I want sorry. You can buy a razr for $200 for that.

That visual voicemail Obviously its not a feature of the smartphone - its a network feature . And once the nextwork is willing to open it up, anybody could make a 3rd party voicemail app to do exactly this on Symbian.

Which is exactly what I mean - any other phone allows for the ingenuity of any software developer to give you options - not this one. You only get what was served - and if something new is deveoped you will have to spend $1,000 on a new phone.

And also for the record, any civilized voicemail app allows yu to check "enevelope" info (caller number and time called) before chosing to listen to the message or skip it. Dont give us this BS that Apple has invented the ability to skip messages - you are just as bad as the pathetic press guys. I read one article yesterday where a journalist said this was the first phone to allow you to sync your contacts and calendar. Are you joking me - how much can one lean over to lie and kiss their butt?

Not a real smartphone??? C'mon now....

I am about as much of a Nokia/Symbian fanboy as anyone here on hofo. But give the devil his due. This is as much a "real" a smartphone as any symbian from what I've seen thus far, and in some ways it may even be better. It has a full os (os/x) It has a beautyfull form factor and a georgous screen, a seemingly intuitive layout, and a lot of other innovative features. As for 3rd party apps and what not, let's be serious, we know that they will be comming in short succession after its release the same way the did when v3 first came out. Im not saying the iPhone is the best thing since sliced bread. But I can't help but feel that it's being critisized before we know all that much about it. If anything it will force Nokia to step up there offerings to compete and that should bennifit all of us. I see lot's of people comparing this phone to the N95, I think that may be a mistake, Im betting that it will be the still to be announced E-90 that will be the true rival to the iPhone.

It wont need to run 3rd party software.....apple will have everything people demand for, and they already have mapping software for it and you can get on the web (with safari)

I dunno about the 3rd party apps. Apple is notoriously controlling of their interfaces. I could definitely see them not allowing 3rd party apps. That said, whatever apps do appear for the iPhone will probably be outstanding.

Have you all seen the Iphone web-browser flash demo over at apple.com? With the smooth zooming and translating between portrait and landscape? Pretty impressive stuff and definitely a step above anything Nokia is offering right now.

Ya it's crazy to assume Apple is gonna release 'everything people want'. If anything, Apple is known for keeping it as simple as possible, and charging extra for it. There are thousands of Symbian applications, many for free. When I got my N73, I looked for a way to easily get weather info, MSN and my Gmail account on there. Thanks to Mobile Weather, Live Messenger and Gmail App I got it all done for free. On the iPhone I couldn't do that, unless Apple preloads it, and since they are competing products to Apple, fat chance.

I'm pretty sure at least "widgets" will be open to third party devs. I have a sneaking suspicion so will applications. They'd be stupid not to. They might have HIG in place to insure uniformity in interface, though. Typical Apple.
