+ iPhone! What is so great about?

they don't want it to be like a mac in that sense either.. they want it to run "desktop class" apps that they choose... and too a point i agree but it goes both ways....

if apple or whoever makes first party apps that are excellent quality and do all the things you want it to do then you don't really need the third party..

even today if you look at s60 .. compare 3650 to the n73 from a software stand point the improvement is signifigant where a lot of 3rd party apps are no longer truly needed... (unless it's to hack or crack )

for example,
i don't need smartmovie cause real player plays mp4 video better
i don't need an mp3 app like oggplayer cause the nokia standard one on the n73 works better

(my opinion and of course others will disagree)

but it does go both ways still.. such as a vnes emulator or a full screen caller app... where the first party company may not think of all the "little" things that add value.. but then again... we're a special bunch of phone geeks... the mass just want a phone that can make calls, play music, pictures and videos and multitask... i'd classify that as a smartphone....

and guys.. it's unix based... which means you'll be able to hack it if you really want to...

here go to this link: http://www.engadget.com/2007/01/09/the-iphone-is-not-a-smartphone/

hmmm....this thing must have monster ammounts of ram and cpu power seeing that it could do all that quickly!!

* No 3G. We know you know, but still, it hurts man.
* No over the air iTunes Store downloads or WiFi syncing to your host machine.
* No expandable memory.
* No removable battery.
* No Exchange or Office support.

This is why it's not a "real" smart phone? Those are pretty Bunky reasons IMHO. NO phone is perfect and its only a matter of time before there hacked like anything else to support all sorts of different apps. I would love to know what the cpu is and how much ram this thing has as it does seem very fast. As for the removalble battery issue, while it is a pain you will be able to replace it in the same fasion as people do with the ipod. Tho, I dont know anyone on here who would keep any phoen long enough to have that type of issue

It doesnt really bother me that it has no keyboard (physical) because of how easy and intuitive the interface is. I do love apple, call me a fanboy if you want, but I predict this device to be awesome, considering it has OS X and all the good things to go along with it (widgets, interface) Im sure there will be 3rd party widgets as someone else said, and ive seen shots of it showing maps/gps. What ISNT so great about it? Huge screen, built in wifi, 6-8gb is enough for me on the go, since i use my 30gb ipod at work in a speaker dock and in the car. Anywhere else 4/8gb will be plenty. Im sure there is a way for TV out to be used, and like all apple products they condisered usability first, including the phone function. I cant wait until it comes out, and definetly will be ordering one.

They say it will be sold at the apple stores AND at cingular, would the apple store ones be unlocked? It doesnt bother me anyway, since im on cingular ...

They hooked up with cingular and made the nice voicemail feature, where you can see them/delete them separatly. That would probably only work on cingular.

Where can I pre order one?

Here is the list of my N80ie smart phone capabilities & use them on a daily basis

1) I can make/receive skype calls using this 'skype client' via wifi
2) I can make voip/receive calls using the voip client with viatalk provider.
3) I have 'Remind Me' application which reminds me of missed calls/vmail/sms with customizable ringtone & frequency etc. I can customize it along with profiles.
4) I use 'SmartMovie' application to play my videos
5) I use 'WorldMate' application for 5 day realtime weather forecast, currency rates etc., for up to 5 cities anywhere in the world
6) I use 'TomTom' GPS application for navigation.
7) I use 'LCG Jukebox' as a mp3 player .. Love the cool 'sleep timer' feature which is not avaibale in the std music player application
8) Yahoo go! application for my yahoo mail, yahoo messenger etc., all for free
9) 'Key Lock' application for my slider to lock automatically when its closed.
10) Many more applications & games .... which makes what a smart phone more powerful.

These are only add on apps. I am not talking about active standby, office & all other standard 'smart phone' features.

Now you guys decide if you can do all of these using iPhone. If you can do then you call it as a smart phone.

1-2)we don't know apple's standpoint on skype.. but for now it's a no.. but that's mainly cause they're working with cingular.. i think skype or voip is a very possible solution
3)remind me app is your app of choice.. you may think it's the best... but there are alternatives that are built into the phone that may be equal or better
4)smartmovie... well that have ipod video (and if they add more file support then ipod video may be better)
5)apple calls them widgets and the weather widget is there... and the possibility to install more of your own
6)tom tom vs. google maps.. well obviously tom tom is the winner
7)LCG vs. itunes... hmmm you can decide what you prefer
8)yahoo go! and on the iphone you get push and safari (not sure about the messenger client yet.. but i'm sure they'll jam one in
9)keylock app is not an advantage... that's nokia being too stupid to put one in after all this time...
10)agree.. open source gives more choices and fun.. but that doesn't mean they are always better then first party apps.

i agree with you on all your points except your last one, why would you want to spend 500+ on a phone were the firstthing you have to do is hack it to use 3rd party apps?

I just finished watching video of the IPhone demo and have to agree with the posts here that this is not a smartphone. As far as I can see it doesn't really introduce any major features that can't be found elsewhere and the on screen keyboard will be a pain for people.

Does anyone know what the size of the battery will be on this thing and if it's removable? I know there were rumours of it having two batteries, one for music and another for the phone, but looking at its size of it I don't think it does. With Wifi, Bluetooth and Edge, which could be running at the same time, people will see their battery drain pretty quickly.

This thing has built in gps but no way to load local mapping software that I know of. If you will only be able to use google maps data costs will be expensive over Edge.

No 3G is stupid. For a phone that will cost $499-599 it should be 3G.

The thing that annoyed me the most though was when Jobs said it runs OS X which could give people the impression that the phone will be able to run regular full OS X apps, it would be similar to MS saying their phones run Windows instead of saying Windows Mobile. It would've been more accurate to have said it runs a mobile version of OS X.

Having said all that they will sell a truckload of these things although I don't understand why.

Certain features I may not like the way manufacturer put it in the phone. The above points were few examples. Those are not bugs, Nokia put them in a generic way as it is very hard to build for everyone needs & I could customize to my needs based on the 3rd party apps.

The point I was making is that with 'smart phone' one can customize to his/her own need with the help of 3rd party applications. That's why Nokia is calling the latest N Series as 'mutimedia computers' due to the vast capabilities of these phones. Apple 'may' build some features better than Nokia but it may not suit my needs & without 3rd party apps this phone would be a piece of brick for me.

I never said apple will tell you what you 'need' I said they would (or shall i say SHOULD) offer what everyone demands for......you know supply and demand?

Off topic....does anyone know for sure if cingular will make people have data plans for this phone? I want to keep my plan, and use the WiFi for internet/data, since I have wireless at home and wireless at my work.

Yeah closed.. which means not open

Not open for 3rd party apps, cannot be 'enhanced' with additional applications/features. Even freaking battery is closed. What If I am am on a two 10 hr flights to Australia from New York with an 1 hr connection in Europe? How the hell I can use this apple's phone with limited battery supply?

With any of the other phones I can carry additional batteries & use them as and when needed.

Actually, I suspect the iPhone will be able to do most of those, and probably much of it better. I think you chose bad example because many of them play into Apple's strengths (multimedia, widgets, etc).

Voip/Skype you may have a valid concern and I'm generally with you on the negatives of a closed environment. But if Apple can provide 80% of the apps that most people need and do them very well (because apple generally does their apps very well), I think they might have a serious player in the space. Even without the flexibility of 3rd party apps.

ps - I'm jealous of your Yahoo Go!. Stupid closed beta.

Ive had symbian phones before, and tried many different free apps and most of them were not the greatest, and some even screwed up the phone. This is exactly what apple doesnt want to happen, since the phone MUST work all the time. Same applies for their computers, Ive used apples for years and almost NEVER have any problems, everything just works. Never locks up, always there when I need it. And, the applications apple will offer for it (besides what it comes with, which is almost all I need) will be top class applications and run perfect and still use the same UI, keeping it simple for people to use. I hated having a symbian phone with a bunch of 3rd party apps that look like crap, take forever to load, etc. I know they all dont do that, but most GOOD ones you have to pay for.

And, honestly if you don't like the phone, or it wont work for you, dont buy it and stop complaining about it. Thats why they make more than one cell phone....different strokes for different folks

Well there is a telling statement. You dont need 3rd party software because....they will tell you what you "need". Sorry I dnt buy Old Soviet Union style products.

And as for web based mapping - it costs money in data charges - a lot of money. Which is why people prefer to buy one time and be done. And that way you are not dependent on coverage, reception etc either.

Nor is web based mapping an Apple innovation, lest you try to make that claim too.

I wonder if it uses a flash drive like the nanos or a real spin drive like the big boys. If it's a flash there might just be room in it for 2 batteries as stated above. I'm lucky because I can bash it and get my N95 and when it gets released my wife has now fallen in love with it after seeing more photos of the UI on the web. I think the thing I like the most (aside from that NYtimes webpage photo) is the ipod UI itself. Touchscreen that allows you to jump from a-z in 1 tap as opposed to scrolling the wheel around 600 times.
