Internet DVD rental

LoveFilm are getting my next films out quicker than anyone has before at the mo. Sent my last lot back on wednesday last week, and got my next three, all my first choices, on the friday.

Can't fault them really.

I wonder if the plan in the UK online DVD rental world is this;

Merge all the big companies together so only 2 big players are left and these companies then contimue to offer the current levels of crappy service, but the key difference is that with no other major players out there, they expect more and more people will stay with them and just put up with the service through the lack of anywhere else to go, leaving them the winners and the customers the losers?

Or am being cynical? :)

This is my observation:
Over the last couple of years the DVD online market has built up quite a good customer base, I should imagine.

I have in that time dumped Sky Digital and since found out that watching a DVD film (or 2 a night) is much better that watching it on sky about 12 months later. When you get into the habbit of watching DVRAB earlier that Sky it is difficult to switch back, unless I was to give up telly for 12 months - perhaps I should :)
It has now got to the period where people like me do not rely upon Sky TV for their movies.

So as an example I watch 6 movies a week x 52 weeks = 312 movies divide that by 12 months = average 26 movies a month.

If I was to pay say

26 DVRAB a month used to be quite a regular thing with dvd rental companies.

Now I find Screenselect and Lovefilm nowhere near that figure. Also finding blockbuster are starting to find it difficult to provide that many aswell.

I suspect sending out as many as 26 a month is giving them very little profit. When online rentals first started out it appears that their main objective was to bring in customers, now that they have experience in the field I'm guessing their new policies involve cutting costs which involves throttling.

i have been a member of blockbuster.co.uk since january this year, i had my free month and then quickly upgraded to my 5 at a time option.

i usually get between 10- 15 a week and although they may not be the top of my list they are always something i have asked for . i currently have around 300 on my list and have had no problems with the service.

i have however had a problem with royal mail, delivering my dvd's, i have a house mate and each of his dvd's from screenselect arrived ok, but the blockbuster ones have arrived opened and resealed or not at all. i logged a complaint with royalmail and since that point every thing has been going ok, also i noticed that blockbuster have recently changed their packaging and i think this has helped a little too.

i can easily get around 50 a month and if they are lost they are dispatched straight away and removed from my list.

the only problem i have with blockbuster is that they do not have a list of films dispatched for your account unline screenselect. my typical turn around is 2 days. depending upon the post.
