Well, I called T-mo straight away to cancel the insurance and the CS person there spent a little time checking and told me that while Asurion (or whatever they're called) wouldn't normally insure a non-T-mobile device, they would continue to insure me because I had insurance on the prior device on this number (my first 8100 R.I.P), they would continue to insure the new device on the line regardless of how I got it. Does that seem legit to you guys, or was this fellow ill-informed? For what its worth, he sounded like he knew what he was talking about.
If this is true, I will be one happy camper. I was always about ready to cancel my old insurance, but I hung onto it as I am kind of prone to losing/dropping stuff. The old Pearl died of high mileage, not abuse or an accident, and though I could have paid the deductible for a new one, it ended up being so close to launch of the 8120 that I spent a $bunch$ on an unlocked one instead. My only anxiety about this has been that I paid full retail for it and so dropping or breaking it would be a much bigger loss. If what I was told today is correct, I'll be breathing WAY easier.
