Insulting one's parenting skills?

I was wondering, how come even though you could beat someone up or steal from them and eventually they'd get over it, if you insult their abilities as a parent, it's like the most horrific moral crime in the world.
Everyone I've ever gotten into an argument with that has forced me to reduce to juvenile verbal insults, they can wash off anything. But oh no, if I call them a bad parent (which I don't do unless the person really sucks at it and is raising a fucktard) all Hell breaks loose and I'm the world' s worst criminal.

Anyone care to explain why parents get so uptight about this more than anything else? My personal thought is that it's a defence thing. They know it's true and like a typical human they have trouble accepting reality, so blow up when faced with it.
It's something I've pondered for a long time, but was mainly triggered by an incident a few weeks ago when my neighbour's 14 year old smashed my car window for no reason. The neighbour is a drunk waste, and I thought it necessary to point out the obvious flaw. I have experience in human psychology.

Everybody wants to think that their kid is an astronaut, Einstein or Elvis.
Few will accept the truth that they just might have a psycho, tweaker or bottom feeder.
