Innovate or Fail

I want to know your perspective on innovation in the gaming market.

I think innovation in the gaming market has all but dwindled away, with developing prices of games sky rocketing companies try to "keep it safe" by release slightly revamped versions of a previous franchise.

I believe if there is little to know innovation in the next five years the video game market will soon go bankrupt not because necessarily there is no one buying games, but the games itself cost so much to make.

Developers need to really start to think about the unknown and outside of the box in order to hold the attention of the user (gamers). Granted the Nintendo Wii is a step in the right direction, but is it really enough...what do you think?

Gaming is hardly going to die in the next five years, not with how huge of a hit it is with consumers. People are willing to pay 600 for a playstation3, granted there are others who claim its still to expensive. But as long as developers keep making games that attract a gamers audience, the video game industry is going to stay strong.

Ah, but you do have to take in account the business as a whole. Gaming is a huge business and it does generate a lot of money, however over the past 2-3 years the cost of developing has risen exponentially. As I said, in terms of the user...gaming will never day (not for a long long time). But in terms of gaming as a business it might become too much of a risk to venture into new avenues of gaming.

Games for the most part are not developed by the publisher it is the small developers who create these games and release them using the publisher to distribute and pay for many of the expenses for the developer. As these expenses go up so does the risk.

There are far less developers in the market than ever before, because it is not very cost efficient to start a studio anymore.

I mean if a developer spends 3 1/2 years developing a game, which costs between 30-50 million (after marketing, paying employees, etc.) and it only sells 500,000 copies...that developer and publisher lost money because of the development costs. No companies such small returns on games and it is happening often.

Look how much it costs for developers to get the damn devkits for a PS3, then you have a plethora of other costs added onto that.

Overall, if businesses do not start innovating the business side of the gaming market will not be profitable and in turn consoles will die (extreme scenario). That is the reason why companies are turning to micro transactions to turn a profit, normal video games on store shelves are just not making the companies what it used to.

That is not true, AAA games still do not cost 20 Million to make, which they make in sales over the first 2 months of release.
And you must realize, most of advertising for AAA games is free; shows like AOTS and internet forums create hype, an example is Gears of War, which was advertised free in many magazines, not in an ad perse, but in previews glorifying the game.

Just look at the TV industry and all the worrying they do over lost demographics due to video/computer games. As more MMOs,consoles, and games start to appeal to an even wider audience (which they already have, especially with WoW and the Wii) then you'll see them bitch more and more.

Its a huge industry that will be the future of mainstay entertainment. Maybe not in the next 10 years, but in the next 20? Definately.
