I read in a Sociology book that it is normal in Mexican culture to indicate height differently than American culture. In American culture, if you ask how tall someone is, the person will usually hold their hand out horizontally, palm down, and move their hand to whatever height they intend to indicate. The book said that Mexicans use this same gesture only to indicate the height of animals, and use different gestures to indicate the height of plants (a pointing finger) and of people (a vertical palm).
Is there any truth to this?
