but goddamn if the infrastructure in this country is running on borrowed time and there is no money for that.

thanks for being frank about it at least.

what a bunch of fucked up priorities.

You hit on something here. My thought is that people should be taxed according to how much they rely on or use government benefits. To be sure, the rich are as guilty as anyone here. But the single largest sources of federal government spending are defense, social security, and medicare. 2/3 of that is basically a safety net for lower income people. Then there are other safety net programs that collectively spend more than medicare.

IMO asking the people who benefit from these programs to pay the taxes for them is accountability and is the next best thing to a full opt-out option. Defense of course is something that the rich do benefit from, how much they benefit (at least in relation to spending) I think is hard to determine. Even if you allocated the entire defense budget to the top 1% of the population, the rest would fall heavily on other people.

No, I'm taking about tax cuts, deductions, etc. they are the same thing, it didn't matter if they are for corporate or personal taxes.

Paying less taxes is not the govt giving you money

So you don't get the concept that businesses don't pay taxes, customers pay them as part of the price of gooRAB and services.

Thus, a tax hike on a business or industry is actually a tax hike on its customers corabined with a hit to demand that hurts the business and forces them to cut either production or production costs (layoRAB).

and then you get mad at the business for laying off those poor downtrodden workers and demand they be punished with higher taxes

GOTO 10

If your rent goes down, is that your landlord giving you money?
If your lunch is $1 cheaper, did the restaurant give you money?

well I think they are NOT the same thing. corporations are not people. period.

they should not be treated like people. period.

they should pay taxes. period.

and yes, paying less taxes CAN be in the form of the govt giving you money.

you didn't forget about that check Bush sent out to everyone, did you?

That isn't entirely true that companies pass on taxes on their profits to customers. I mean, businesses try to maximize their profits anyway. So, just because a higher percent of their profits are taxed doesn't mean that they'll raise prices as they already should have an optimal price to maximize profits. Know what I'm sayin'?

It is more true for sales taxes... But even then with higher sales taxes the new optimal price won't rise at a 1:1 ratio with the increase in sales tax. The price would increase slightly less than the sales tax.

Don't mind me. I just see people saying that all the time and it seems a bit silly to me.

No, of course the effects of taxing a business can be varied and complicated. For instance if you put a 5% surtax on a business with a 3% profit margin, they are either going to have to charge more for their product or close the doors. Sometimes they can get away with charging more, but sales will drop off at the higher price, requiring scaled back production and layoRAB.

But taking the best case, if the business is able to simply eat the extra cost, it still is going to have a negative effect since they will have that much less money to reinvest in the company for expansion, R&D, or whatever. That also kills growth and job creation.

I would rather take a chance on that than not bother charging taxes.

because there is no guarantee every company will hand off 100 percent of these taxes to consumers. some companies out there may find a competitive advantage by seeing a lower profit margin and bump up volume to get a bigger market share....

Close shop in expensive over regulated over taxed places and move to China/Middle East where business is not burdened by taxes and regulations.

companies aren't going out of business.

never believe a businessman when he says he isn't making any money unless he shows you his books.

and the "out of control" government spending is because CONSUMERS are broke, not the government.
