in culture medium, what is a colony?

A colony is millions of micro-organisms descended from the single or mixed organisms that got onto the plate and grew using the nutrients in the medium. If you thinned out the organisms in the first place, i.e. by streakiing, a colony can be produced by a single3 organism.
 
A colony is a small white dot that grows on a nutrient rich agar plate (it is just bacteria growing within that area).

Culture medioum is luria broth.
