Improving sound quality on my new Astra CDC 40 Opera?

I have a 3 door new style/shape Astra (UK model from Nov 2007). The stereo is the CDC 40 Opera with DAB, and the sound quality is pretty poor. Music sounds empty or 'tinny' and the stereo cannot produce that 'car filling sound' that you'd want. Turning up the stereo just seems to muffle the music whilst making it slightly louder. It has plenty of options for adjusting bass/treble/etc and it even has an equalizer, but I've played with these settings and am still disappointed.

My question is what can I do about it?

I know a little about car stereo's and 'ICE', but I'd rather not bother getting loads of amps, and subs etc (and a new head unit is definitely not an option).

Does anyone know if just changing the speakers will help? Is there any way to tell whether the problem is with poor quality speakers, or with a lack of power? or both?

I'm hoping to be able to just change the speakers and then crank it a bit, but I appreciate that the head unit might be grossly underpowered.
