Impossible, platonic love...

If you're looking for unrequited romance, you need not look much further than Charles Schultz's Peanuts. There were a number of one-sided romances going on there:
  • Charlie Brown and the Little Red Haired Girl (In this case, she may or may not have liked Chuck back. The problem was that he was too petrified to go near her).
  • Lucy and Schroder (She likes him. He can't stand her.)
  • Sally and Linus (See above)
  • Peppermint Patty and Charlie Brown (She liked him, but he just wanted to be friends)
  • Marcie and Charlie Brown (CB was a pretty popular guy!)

I know in the "Your in Love Charlie Brown" and "It's your First Kiss Charlie Brown," the little red hair girl showed interest in him.

Lesser known example: on Class of 3000, mega-rich boy Eddie Lawrence III was hot for tough girl Tamika Jones, but she generally paid him no mind. Tamika did briefly return his affections in the Christmas episode, until she learned that he got the idea for her perfect Xmas gift from someone else.

On Johnny Test, the Test Twins (Susan & Mary) are constantly swooning over their next door neighbor, Gil, although he barely knows that they exist. He constantly needs to be reminded who they are, despite the fact that he's lived next door to the Tests for 13 years.

Peppermint Patty played mind games with Charlie Brown. She liked him but had such a love/hate relationship with him that he never knew what to make of her. Marcie would go straight out and tell Charlie Brown how she felt about him but he never took her seriously and was always wrapped up in the Little Red Haired Girl.

My favorite such one-sided relationship is probably Sonic X Amy. I just think it's cool that unlike in so many other long-running series, is has never even hinted that the main hero has any romantic interest in his "would-be-girlfriend". Or any romantic interests in anyone, for that matter.

Well, this isn't exactly what I meant but I guess it's close enough.

Take my example of Brian and Louis, they're both attracted to one another but can't be together sexually and/or in public because 1. Louis is married. 2. That would ruin their friendship. 3. Brian is, well, you know, of the canine variety.

Another example might be Raven and Beast Boy. They obviously share a deep mutual affection for one another, but are such polar opposites that any sort of love between them might be akward.

I hate to nitpick, but it's actually Lois. L-O-I-S. Louis is a man's name.

Raven and Beast Boy did actually get together at one point in the Teen Titans comics, although it never happened in the cartoon. On the TV show, it was only occasionally hinted at.

"You can't spell love without L-O. You can't spell is without I-S. You can't spell... silo without Lois." From Emission Impossible.

And speaking of Family Guy, there's always that weird Brian and Stewie pairing that the writers occasionally hint at (sure, it's a joke pairing, but a pairing nonetheless). But due to, among other things, how Brian gets unnerved whenever one of these moments happen, it'll never work out.

I'm not a big fan of one-sided crushes, since it can get repetitive and drawn out, but I felt Irma/Martin was handled in a pretty mature way in WITCH. They actually sat down and talked about it: she acknowledges his feelings, and is even flattered and appreciates it, but she just doesn't view him as anything other than a friend, and she's careful not to hurt his feelings or mislead him. A good way to resolve an 'unresolvable' relationship.

There are many "Peanuts" examples, but there are two examples in "Fairly Oddparents", too, as followed.

Timmy Turner and Tootie (she is in love with him, but he does not love her)

Timmy Turner and Trixie Tang (the opposite as the previous, he is infatuated with her, but she is not with him)

I cannot think of any more at the moment, but I am sure there are many more, and for Brian and Lois, Brian just has to learn to date his own species, that is why his relationships with women/humans never work out.

Looneytunes/Disneytoons

The problem with that is that none of the other dogs on the show have human intelligence like Brian does. Brian wouldn't be any happier with a 'real" dog than a human being would. Although he did have a brief fling with Carter's racing dog Seabreeze.

Funny, I always though Peppermint Patty and Marcie were more interested in, you know....each other.

But as far as impossible love goes, I nominate Goliath and Elisa Maza from Gargoyles. Different worlds? Hell, they're different SPECIES!
