im trying to properly underpower a 500 watt speaker with a 100 watt kicker amp.?

my question is what should the gains be set at? i have a sony explode deck if that matters.

Well no matter what it depends on the RMS of the speaker and the amp. Usually kicker amps are way underrated and if its a cheaper sub then its WAY overrated like sony subs
