So every since I was younger my mom would teach me about different cultures and lifestyles but she would always talk about how important the black culture was because of slavery and etc. She would read me books and tell me about Coretta Scott King and Dr. King and I've been hooked. So anyway I'm in my second year of college and majoring in African American studies and I really enjoy this class but the students in the class don't like me for some reason. (I'm the only white person in the class) Every time I make comment about a topic were discussing in class the students start saying stuff like "This white girl ain't got no business wanting to learn about our culture." "Go back to the suburbs." I mean this hurts me because my classmates are judging me and they don't even know me. I've talked to the professor about this and he said that the students aren't use to a young white women taking these type of classes. I wanna at least make friends with my classmates. I love and respect the African American culture and I don't want to give it up because of my classmates. What should I do?
Yes when I started attending college I thought the students would be more mature, but there really not. It kinda reminds me of high school to be honest. Also I'm very serious about learning about learning more about the African American culture and become a teacher like my mom who teaches a African American history class at a private school.

Proud to be white: You are really ignorant because the black culture is lot more interesting then the white culture and you need to be more open-minded.
I attend Prince George's Community College. Its a pretty nice community college but it just that class and I took some of your advice and stood up for myself today.

Hello,

Carry on. Bear in mind that it is the Professor who will pass or fail you in this course; not the other students. I took African History courses and was one of the top students in those classes of mixed black and white. The professors would fail or chastise anyone white or black who didn't study, pass the exam or do their term papers in order to learn.

Cheers,

Michael Kelly

first of all i want to commend you for being so open to other cultures and I apologize for their boorish and idiotic behavior that they have distributed
I think they feel threatened that someone else is trying to learn about their culture and that they might start to learn more about it than they do-
I think that the professor was extremely wrong not to put an end to such nonsense immediately- express ur concern to the principal as well and seek his advice
God bless and good luck...
