I'm looking to buy a sound system for my car, possibly used, and need some advice!?

I have a 2005 Jetta GLI with a Pioneer Premier CD player, and am looking to upgrade the rest of the sound system. I'm not very impressed with the speakers in the car (maybe some of them are blown out?), and am also considering getting a sub/amp. I've seen a lot of used ones for sale on Craigslist, but need some advice on what to look for in terms of the sub, amp, connection cords, and speakers. Any advice you can offer would be much appreciated. Thanks!
