Im having problems with splitting an input signal between two car audio amplifiers?

One of my amplifiers has an input and an output and i tried hooking my second amplifier's IN to my first amplifier's OUT. However, the signal coming out is VERY quiet and not enough for my second amp to recreate loudly. Could i simply split the signal RCA cable into two cables with those little 99 cent adapters? Or would this also leave me with a quiet signal between the two? IF this is the case, what is a cheap solution for pre-amplification of the signal?
Thanks that's what i hoped!
Actually, i just tried Y cables and it sounded terrible. Hooking both amplifiers up to the same output from the head unit caused EVERYTHING to sound choppy and cut in and out at different intervals... does this mean i need a preamplifier?
