It was never the norm even in its heyday. It was the fringe. Roy Orbison was the norm, not bob Dylan.
The killer for psychedelic culture was Reagan, Meese, and the Omnibus Crime Control Act, which really amounted to a Holy War, or Christian Jihad against all users of controlled substances, no matter how small their stashes, or how infrequent their recreational use, and no matter whether they sold or just bought. The Controlled Substances Act and the Omnibus Act allowed the government to imprison a first time user of trace amounts of LSD for 50 years to life.
There was absolutely no relationship between these laws and any concept of justice. It was just a holy war. The law makers and law enforcers were fighting for God's benefit against agents of Satan, or at least that's how they saw their conduct and rationalized their crazy behavior.
I was a prosecutor for the government during this period. I often got yelled at and scolded very strongly by my boss just for being a reasonable lawyer trying to do basic justice, but not lunatic injustice for God's benefit. I thought NORML was on the right track. They wanted not legalization per se but just rational penalties so the punishment sort of fit the crime. Murderers on the average were back on the street in about 6 to 8 years. But somebody who dropped one tab of acid could go away for 25 years, easy.
A lot of the Nixon appointed judges were still on the Federal Court bench at this time, so Meese really had a choir to sing to, and Reagan appointed more of the same sort of judges -- real martinets to do God a favor by twisting the greatest legal system on Earth into an Inquisition style witch hunt for the acid heads and mushroom eaters.
These were incredibly ignorant people. LSD first came into common use during the Golden Age of ancient Greece when it played a key role in the Eleusinian Mysteries -- the only major religion of Athens during the Golden Age (see Hoffman and Kerenyi -- The Mysteries of Eleusis). The Rarian plain wheat contained a wheat rust containing LSD.
It was also widely used during the Middle Ages, sometimes unintentionally, sometimes on purpose -- St. Elmo's Fire, the Ergot fungus is a source of lysergic acid diethylamide -- and it is sometime found on bread.
Psychedelics are not narcotics, nor are they stimulants, nor are they depressants. The government had to go way out of its way to criminalize psychedelics, and they didn't even succeed.
We used to buy Heavenly Blues, Pearly Gates, and Flying Saucers morning glory seeds, Soak them for a week to remove much of the natural strychnine they contain. Then dry them in a kiln for 10 hours. Then grind the seed into fine powder, like talcum powder. Then mix with sweet applesauce and eat. One seed is about one microgram, so never do more than 200 seeds on a first try. Never do any without an experienced anchor person who will be with you during your experience. Never do any if you have any physical or mental illness -- (especially schizoprhenia, clinical depression, bi-polar disorder, or paranoid psychosis) -- if you are already nuts you are not ready for LSD -- bottom line -- don't fool with it. If you don't know whether you are nuts or not, do not take the chance, the middle of an acid trip is the wrong time to find out and may leave you permanently impaired. Do not try your luck. Never do more than 600 seeds on any try. This material works its way out of your system very slowly, so once you take it, it's at least an 8 to 10 hour trip. It's also very likely to make you vomit in the first hour, so try to be outside when that happens. As a Federal attorney, I cannot counsel you to break the law. So don't break the law. Some prosecutors and some judges (appointed by G.W. Bush or his dad) might think that playing about with Morninglory seeds was breaking the law, especially if it was done for pleasure, not like Dubya's decades of drinking binges and drunk driving -- see that was just innocent excess -- but Morninglory seeds were made by Satan -- not like beer, so it's different for them. There are countries where the laws are not quite so crazy, and there are airplanes, so be like Jefferson, get on an airplane. Don't know when you'll be back again -- that's cool, peace on!
I was sorry to see the psychdelic movement end -- and my whole generation be swept off the stage of history as if the Summer of Love had never happened -- as if Woodstock, or Newport had never happened.
Most of what's good in American today we set in motion. Most of what sick in America today was set in motion by our persecutors and Inquisitors, who of course, were doing God a favor.
