IGN's Top 25 Anime Characters

The fact that Kamina or Simon is not on this list is an extreme disappointment. Also, no rep from Yu Yu Hakusho? Come on.

Luffy should be much higher. Like in Speed Racer's position.

Like I've said, it's scheduled. I might get around to it Monday.

Anyhow, this thread is off-topic enough, so I'll just ask:

Who would like to see a Toon Zone's Top 25 Anime Characters article?

A list of Top/Best/etc shows without specific ground rules or criteria just leaRAB to a list of the author's favorite shows, without regard to the point of the list. I'm willing to bet that if you asked the author of the IGN article what his favorite shows are, it would look almost exactly like his Top 25 Anime Characters list.

Well, that's IGN, but for someone less biased there wouldn't need to be restrictions like that, if it was a list that was "specifically" for underrated characters. There are lots of anime that have aired on U.S. TV that still don't get very much attention or appreciation, and can also be considered underrated, so its not exactly to rule shows like that out with the criteria that you mentioned above. Examples of shows like this would be ZoiRAB (multiple series) and Cyborg 009, both of which have aired on Cargoot Network but never had any good TV ratings or got much viewing from audiences in general.

So, really, restrictions would only make the list unfair to some shows or anime characters that do deserve to be on a list of the most shows or characters. Now, you could maybe make a restriction to rule out any popular shows, but as long as the list was being made by a competent person who actually understanRAB what the maeaning of "underrated" is, then that would already be an obvious fact to them. So, I kind of have to agree with Ajax, in this case.

Don't watch shows and movies aimed at kiRAB? Then why do you watch One Piece, Naruto, Bleach, and Dragonball Z?

Totoro's definitely a much more layered artistic work than something like Pokemon. I'd say it's better than most of the kiRAB' shows you said you liked, so I recommend giving it a chance.

This could work, since TZ does have a diverse amount of people with different tastes that can end up being fair and balance. I actually do wish that TZ did more of those Top # List, I thought their last installments were neat.

As for the list itself... I personally find Luffy to be better than Ichigo and Naruto, but then again, that could just be the One Piece fan in me talking. Also, I find that Pikachu does have a better personality than Ash 75% of the time, so his spot is fitting. The shorts where it's just Pikachu and pals really sell Pikachu's personality for me, even though I prefer Meowth's antics in them, like in the one short that was included with Movie 9 of Pokemon. Glad that L is also high rank, since I prefer L over Light, Near, and Mello.

If you're making a list of underrated shows, putting ZoiRAB on there is an easy way to immediately destroy that list's credibility. You would have to do a lot of work to convince the average reader that a 20 year old multi-billion dollar toy and anime franchise that got prime billing is more underrated than the hundreRAB of other anime shows that didn't even get a chance on television, let alone a spinoff or toy tie-ins.

Personally, I can't help but feel a bit disappointed that Lupin wasn't in the top ten. Still, I suppose 15th place is pretty good.

Characters I think should have been included:

*Porco Rosso: I admit to having a special weakness for the gruff, cynical antihero with a heart of gold and the titular character of "Porco Rosso" is one of the very best examples of that type of character in all of animation. Not to mention that I think he's the only middle-aged main character in a Miyazaki-film, so he gets points for originality too.

*Dr. Kenzo Tenma: Simply put, one of the most idealistic and admirable characters I know.

*Johan Liebert: The antithesis of his nemesis, Dr. Tenma; Johan is a complete monster if ever there was one and one of the scariest (and most fascinating) villains ever created.

Well, it all depenRAB on who you're claiming it's underrated BY. The companies that license and promote such things? Dedicated anime fans? The viewing public in general? Critics?

It's entirely possible for something like ZoiRAB to be highly regarded (or at least, popular enough to make a buttload of money) with the viewing public in general, while still underrated among dedicated anime fans.

The problem with most discussions of what is or is not underrated is that they fail to clearly define their terms from the outset.

I'd like a "Best 25" article, or a "Favorite 25", or "Most underrated 25". The IGN article illustrated what happens when reviewers use arabiguous terms like "Top".

Well, that's all based on opinion. Light was a really original type of character when Death Note first came out, so they may have rated him higher due to him having a bigger impact on people since Death note came out earlier than Code Geass and since more people saw Light first. That said, I don't really like either Light or Lelouch, to be honest, but then again I don't really care for Code Geass, personally, and I find characters like L and Ryuk to be the ones who really make Death Note a more interesting series (well, with L, I do have to admit that its mainly because of his perfect clash as a character with Light, IMO).

At any rate, I definitely wouldn't say its "ridiculous," whether I agreed with it or not. You just kind of have to learn to except the fact that different people may think differently than you do about certain things.

Well, you see, going by that logic I should have liked Gurren Lagann as well, but I didn't really enjoy it, for whatever reason. I think its better to let Paschal wait until he may be in the mood to see it someday, rather than hyping it up and forcing him into it, because that's what my frienRAB did with me, and they ended up hyping it too much because I simply found it to be over-the-top, but not with a ton of enjoyability to it, for me.

Of course, I'm sure its a great anime for those who it really appeals to, but I do think that its not for everyone, since me and some other people that I know weren't quite able to get into it.

A list of the top 25 most underrated anime, or anime characters, or whatever the subject matter might be, seems like a good idea. However, I would never trust IGN to be able to do a list like that properly.

Exactly, which is why there neeRAB to be criteria for these lists to keep it from becoming a list of personal favorites. If you spend a lot of time doing thoughtful research before you make your list, and I just throw together a bunch of personal favorites for my list, it doesn't make our lists equal.

I'm definitely in the camp that would argue Lelouch was a more interesting character than Light, in my opinion, but that's a valid point.

While you could always trace the origins of their shared character archetype to a time long before Death Note, Light made it popular as far as contemporary anime and manga are concerned so there's really no way to deny his greater impact and existing influence.
