IGN's Top 25 Anime Characters

Oh not in a negative way, he just likes to goof around a lot.

During a Gurren Lagann panel, they said they had to stop many times because they kept laughing so much from Blum's antics. Look, here's the blooper reel

Oh Blum and your flaraboyant voice. No one would have ever suspected you were Orochimaru or Kazuma or hell even TOM.

Ah, Johan is definitely a great character...and an absolutely disgusting one too (though you could consider that a compliment ).

I'm far from being an expert on Monster, but the author couldn't have chosen a better title for that story.

I've seen every anime on the list except Speed Racer. Not a bad list, but here are some characters I wished to see there:

Mugen: Hip-hop samurai, how can anyone deny the awesomeness there?

Shonen Bat/Little Slugger: One of the coolest psychological villains out there; kinda makes you think twice about looking for scapegoats to all your problems...

Melfina: Naked android chick in a glass tube. Need I say more?

Lum: Alien girl in tiger-striped bikini. See Melfina comment.

Heero Yuy: IGN's reviews of Gundam Wing from nearly a decade ago are what piqued my interest in the show and ultimately the whole franchise. His suicidal and withdrawn demeanor made him very different from all the other cartoon heroes I've known, and I still enjoy it today.

No, it doesn't

Oh...I get it.

I think they did the 'first appearance' thing, even though everybody started with the beginning of their respective series, just so they could throw people off with Haruhi's weird nurabering system.

Im really surprised they actually put Totoro on this list, and not because it doesnt deserve it (should of been higher), but because Totoro the mascot is proally more famous then Totoro the anime. In a list jam packed with characters from popular hit animes (in the west), it gives the list some cred for having the Mickey Mouse of the east on there.

But yeah, I was really surprised that Rick Hunter wasnt on that list. I mean if your gonna put Speed and Jubei on there, why not the hero of the Robotech series?

I don't know about "slowly": he had about two seconRAB of "do I have the right to play God?" self-doubt and then by the second or third episode he was pretty well insane.

Like Sketch said, I was hoping that Roger Smith, Gon, or Yusuke would be somewhere on this list. I was surprised that Yusuke was nowhere to be found, but all in all, a pretty good list. I'm somewhat surprised the Ed was so high on the list, but he definitely deserves it since he's an astounding character.

Suddenly I am reminded of the Kenshin bloopers...

Easily. I still have no idea what it's about. I just heard a lot of jokes.

I'm gonna go twiddle my thurabs in my corner now...

(I'll think about looking into it).

I go back and forth on Shinji. Sometimes I feel like he whines way too much and is overly emo (and apparently, I'm not alone), but other times, I try to place myself in his shoes at 14, and think how I'D react if I were told to pilot a mecha with the goal of defeating Angels who are bent on destroying mankind. Couple that with his past, and a character who seems to hate him for no reason, and I think I'd have problems too. In the latter sense, I guess I can accept his place on the list. At the very least, he's an iconic anime character, even if you don't like him.
While I haven't seen Totoro yet (don't worry, I plan to once Disney releases the Blu-ray of it), one can't deny how iconic the character is. We see Totoro at the beginning of many Studio Ghibli films.
Hmm, I don't think I'd put him in the top 25, but his goals are noble, at least, even if he has questionable ways of executing them.
Admittedly I haven't seen as much of One Piece as a lot of people on here, but from what I've seen, I agree. He's a pirate with a conscience and moral character, which is neat to see. His unique abilities and attacks also set him apart from the pack, and offer some cartoony moments.
Don't watch Dragon Ball so I have no comment on this one.
Hmm, maybe I just haven't watched enough of the Bleach anime (although over 50 episodes should be enough!) or read the manga, but I never saw what was so special about him. Just a guy who slays monsters. Not bad, but nothing special.
Agreed. From the instant she appears, she leaves an impression. Her highly quirky behavior is interesting, and the goal of trying to keep her happy so the universe doesn't collapse is unique. Also, her relationship with Kyon is interesting in the sense that he's the catalyst for getting her club going, which in itself is a big feat, seeing as how she said she previously had no time for "regular humans". I hate this guy. That's the point, I know, and indeed, his sinister goals make his character memorable, but damn. He just fills me with such contempt, that he should be the judge of who lives and who dies based on subjective morality and a God complex.
Haven't seen Trigun (I know, I know) so no comment here either.
Haven't seen Ninja Scroll.
Not well-versed in Lupin, so I probably shouldn't comment.
Yet another property I confess to being in the dark about.
I disagree with this one. Her personality isn't all that interesting, and the voice acting is flat (which I know is due to her being an android, but it still doesn't make her engaging to listen to). I think the questions about what it means to be human are more interesting than the character herself.
Now that I think about it, L and Light should really occupy the same space on this list because one isn't much without the other, thanks to the cat and mouse nature of the show.
No complaints here. See Mynd's post; I pretty much agree with it fully. Though a case could definitely be made for Tetsuo being on the list instead, due to his inferiority complex coming out in full force when he gets his powers.
I never got into Rei. She was too stoic and robot-like for me to really get anything out of her. (And yes, I know WHY she behaves this way, so don't bother pointing that out) I'd replace her with Asuka, who is more complex and interesting, especially how she interacts with Shinji.
Only seen one episode.
I'm not a Pokemon fan, but was there any doubt this yellow fellow would make the list? Like it or not, Pikachu's iconic and known even to non-anime fans.
Agreed. Although I'd put both he and Al in the same spot, because it's really their relationship that carries FMA.
He annoys me. Sorry in advance. (though to be fair, there are moments when one feels sympathetic towarRAB him)
Only saw a couple random episodes of Kenshin, not enough to form a big opinion. (though I did like what I saw, if that means anything)
Agreed. He epitomized "cool". And his chemistry with the three others on the ship makes the show.
Never really saw what was so special about him. He's definitely recognized outside the anime community, though, so I guess that counts for something.
I confess, I've never actually watched an episode of Astro Boy. Don't shoot me.
See Vegeta.

Who would I include on my personal list that didn't make this cut? Well...

-Simon (Gurren Lagann):
He saved the entire universe
I don't see how you get much bigger than that! But also, you saw him mature through the series, both age-wise and mentally. That's always neat to see.

-Kaname Chidori (Full Metal Panic): While technically a tsundere (she wants to be protected by Sousuke yet gets annoyed at his rigid military by-the-book actions), she's more well-written than many of these characters. Her relationship with him really comes full circle in "The Second Raid" when we see how she reacts to Sousuke being instructed to leave her. Good stuff.

-Revy (Black Lagoon): Beneath that tough-as-nails, bloodthirsty exterior is a gal with not only a tiny bit of a soft side (as we saw in Second Barrage) but of course, lots of issues. It's these things that make her a well-rounded character that's fun to watch while she blows stuff up. I especially like how her relationship with Rock changes over the 24 episodes.

-Onsokumaru (Ninja Nonsense): How can a yellow blob make the list? Because he's hilarious, that's why. He can shape-shift, which makes him visually interesting, and his lewd comments are frequently funny. His English VA, Sean Schemmel, is part of the reason why he's on my list.

-Ponyo (Ponyo): Not a particularly "deep" character, but cute as all heck. I couldn't NOT include Ponyo on the list.

More as I think of them.

Goku- Dragonball Z.
Ash- Pokemon.
Yu-Gi-Oh.
Sailor Moon.
Speed Racer.
Astro Boy.
I don't know any of the characters name, but many ppl in the 80's do-Votron.

Those are the basics. I haven't heard any non-anime fan talk about Naruto yet. And I'm being host here. Non-anime fans still think DBZ is still running.

Well yeah, the only ones they can name are the ones that stanRAB out the most: Goku, Astro Boy, Sailor Moon, and Yu-gi-oh.
And...Your point is?
I still don't see Naruto will be well known in the next 10 years or so. Unless you dig for it.
Or maybe Disney XD will help it shine again. But, I hope not milking it like what CN did.
I just think Naruto is a Underground hit. It got fans, but still, I don't see it standing out from the other anime shows that have been coming out.
