If you're an American teen, could you tell me what you learn in English class in High

I honestly envy you for covering so much ground during high school. I live in Canada, and we only have two one-and-a-half hour classes of English a week, and the most significant piece of literature we studied was The Pearl by John Steinbeck. The program here is horrible and doesn't teach us anything; I have to go beyond and learn on my own if I want my English level to be any good.

School there? Just curious really :)
I'm in Ireland and I did King Lear as my Shakespeare play. I did Romeo and Juliet when I was younger.
We compare and contrast a novel, play and film under the headings of Cultural Context, Literary Genre and General Vision and Viewpoint.
We read articles/speeches/short stories/dialogues and then learn how to compose them ourselves.
We learn about 5 poets with 5 poems from each then write about the poet through their poetry.
We have one 40 minute English class every day so.. 200 minutes a week = 3 hours and 20 mins a week. We may cover a lot but because of it my two English exams are 3 hours and 10 mins and 3 hours and 40 mins. :(
