I am 5'3 and 151lbs and female. I would like to go down to 140lbs. I used to keep the resistance really tight and that would only allow me to burn 250 calories in 45 minutes because it would make me go slow. I didn't lose a single pound in a year doing this. But now I loosened up the resistance and I can go really fast and burn 500 calories in an hour. If I keep this up will I lose weight? Of course this is combined with a 1200 to 1400 calorie diet
Well if you're going to say "no" you could explain at least... :/

Probably you were doing it wrong.I lost 15kg in 3.5 months combined with cycling for 1 hour and cutting junk food.Google high intensity interval training.

Yeah, the intensity will and length of time will help you to lose weight, but the high resistance mainly helps to build muscle. Just turn it down a little and push yourself as fast as you can go, and you will see a bit of difference. I weigh about the same and am trying to get to 140, so I am in the same boat, but I have lost 5 pounds in the past 2 weeks by not working out on the elliptical, switching to jogging instead, and getting back on thyroid medicine. (I haven't been able to lose any weight in a while since I went off it even when I was exercising 1-2 hours a day at a moderate pace.) Good luck!

Of course you will! Burning an extra 500 calories a day, while eating 1200-1400 is the PERFECT weight loss plan. Expect 1.5-2 lbs a week.
