If a keytar is just a MIDI controller, how do you get sound?

I'm planning on buying a Yamaha KX5 keytar and don't understand the process of the whole MIDI input / output / synthesizer / sound module thing. Can somebody explain, and list a decent and well-priced object that I can plug the keytar into to create sound?
