If they did indeed 'force you' (i.e. made it a condition of the loan) then it may well have been 'miss-sold' ..

Check on-line and put in a claim ... it's a simple letter anyone can do ...

AVOID the rip-off 'claims advisers' who advertise on TV == they WILL charge you a 30% FEE + 20% VAT (so approx half of anything you might be entitled to)

...eligible for a ppi refund? Four years ago I had to take out a loan for my studies and the bank said I needed payment protection insurance. Can I claim this insurance money back like other loans or is it different because it was a professional loan?

It's worth a shot. It's no different because it's a professional loan - misselling cases are coming up with all sorts of borrowing. The key thing is whether you were misled, there was a breach of the professional rules, or the policy was completely unsuitable. Now's a good time to challenge, as the banks are in the mood to pay out.

Find a solicitor who does a lot of these types of cases, and insist on no win no fee from the word go.

Here's an example of a firm that does a LOT of PPI claims, don't know if they're any good, but at least they're specialists:

EDIT:- Echo what the other poster said about the TV advert claims companies, or cold calling ones. They take a percentage. Use an actual firm of solicitors - these recover all their costs from the bank and don't take anything from your compensation.
