not really. wifi is everywhere here, and in many other cities. life exists without a constant high speed connection. edge is more than enough for mapping and searching.

Edge vs 3G: What the media ISN'T telling people...

Edge Benefits: 1.Reasonably fast connections to the internet, not blazingly fast.
2. Lower cost/month than 3G connections, by a lot!
3. MUCH LOWER BATTERY DRAIN!

Edge drawbacks:
1. Not as fast as 3G (Although NO ONE has run or published any test specs this week. Aren't they supposed to go out and investigate the facts before they spew them forth?

2. Latency issues common to cell broadband service.

3G: Benefits: Faster than EDGE (Just how much is not clear at this time, because no one has tested them head to head).

3G Drawbacks: 1. Costs a lot more than EDGE $60-80

2. Has the same issues with latency delays that are common in EDGE. Which greatly reduces the perceived speed difference. (3G would likely faster on sustained big file downloads, but who is going to do that on a phone?)
3. HUGE BATTERY DRAIN. What's the fun of having faster service if your battery is dead?

EDGE is anywhere from 10-25KB/s

3G if it is well implemented would be 30-250KB/s

(these are best case scenario numbers but that is pretty much the max for EDGE while 3G could go higher)


There are no added costs to the end user and I never noticed a significant battery life difference between being in a 3G area with my Treo 750 or being in an EDGE area. I'm not going to say there isn't a difference but, considering the phone was already fairly battery happy if there was a significant difference I should have noticed it.
