I am quite a big movie fan, and am always looking forward to something or another that is on the way. I also seem to be easily pleased, as I recently saw Shrek Forever After and thought it was quite a good film - maybe not a patch on the first two but that doesn't make it bad. But I shall get to my point....
I cannot watch 3D. I tried it out near the end of last year with Avatar, and for the first five minutes, I had already labelled it with the word gimmick. Even when I tried to abide it, I began to develop a migraine. For the first time in my life, I had to walk out of a cinema, and I never do that, no matter how poor I think a film is, but I was on the verge of passing out.
Back to Shrek, I went to see it with a mate last week and neither of us can watch 3D. I had to travel near on 20 miles just to get to a cinema with a 2D showing- and this is from someone who lives in a town very close to London!
Now, if people like 3D and it is a big money spinner (as is obvious by the fact we had the 2D showing to ourselves), then by all means people should invest further in it- as many have said, it is a minority of people that cannot watch/appreciate the 3D concept. But it is rather unfair to 'abandon' the minority altogether.
I cannot drive yet, and had to use public transport for an hour and a half, just for the sake of a movie. What is supposed to be an enjoyable treat turns into a laborious day out. On the brighter side, I enjoyed the movie, but miss the days when I could just take a walk down the road and see it at my local screen (and these days were not too long ago).
In short: I don't like 3D but the public has spoken, and they do. Fair enough, let movie-makers invest in the business. But don't abandon the rest of us for the sake of your new toy.
