this add resistance? They are around the ear style cans, and I am running them off the an mp3 player. The cords are currently annoyingly long, and I want to cut them down; just wondering if the phones would benefit from running a thicker cable to the jack.

Not when it comes to the speakers in headphones. They are very small and do require high gauge speaker wire to effectively pass speaker current through them. Just use the existing speaker cable, just shorten it.

Just so you know the cable is made up of two conductors for each side in a braided shielded manor to help keep out unwanted RF noise.

A bigger wire of this nature won't hurt a thing.
