Probably about 98 percent. At a conservative estimate.
One could also look at it as government spending being artificially high.Plus, property taxes have to be analyzed in conjunction with state and local income taxes and state and local sales taxes. Often the discrepancy between states' rates of property tax depends on the autonomy of their local governments. That being said, I have no idea if CA has artificially low property taxes or whether they compensate for this with higher income and sales tax.
Probably fewer now that mores states are adding a line to the income tax forms - I think people are more afraid of entering "0" on that line than they were of not filing a separate use tax form.Probably about 98 percent. At a conservative estimate.
Is this letter from the State of California? I think it would be from the "Board of Equalization" or the "Franchise Tax Board" if it's legit.I just received a letter telling me I'll have to pay a California Use Tax. I never heard of this. Evidently, I'll have to pay this Use Tax for any purchase I made out of state that did not charge me tax. So, if I bought a book from Amazon for $20, I owe (I think) $1.75.

In Florida, I'd guess it's closer to 100 per cent, but hardly anyone here has to fill out a state tax return anyway.Probably about 98 percent. At a conservative estimate.
Just because you can do something it doesn't necessarily mean that you should. If you'd have made that post sans the first line you'd have come across as an intelligent, knowledgeable, helpful guy. Instead you chose to preface that with a line that [del]makes you look like[/del] reveals you to be the asshole that you know you are (and which you've rather proudly laid claim to in the past yourself). And if he had posted his thread in GQ, something like, "Hey, i got this letter from the California State Government about use tax, which is something i had never heard of. What is it?", i would have responded with the appropriate tone.
But he marched into the Pit, ranting and raving about something that has been law for decades, and calling California "the nuttiest fucking state," despite the fact that this tax is in no way unusual among US states.
And because it's the Pit, i decided to point out what an ignoramus he is.
It's a simple question about what was to him an unknown piece of the tax code, and it should be possible to answer that without being a putz about it.
You made the same claim in the other thread

I'm skeptical that this letter is from the actual government and not some scam trying to scare you into paying them for something you can do yourself for free. As a homeowner I get something like this every month, trying to scare me into doing something or another because I own a home or need to have my taxes "corrected".

Everyone else is perfectly free to go read the thread themselves and see what a craven little racist you are.
Shot From Guns said:I can't dig into their slimy little minds to prove anything--I can only offer conjecture. And the main difference seems to be that these aren't (to them) Europeans.
But maybe the problem is that my racism exists in your head, and not in reality. I repeat:

Which is the reason I report and pay use tax on my Amazon purchases. Why? He's right. That's the #1 thing I tell my clients: if you've got the IRS on your back, that's easy enough to deal with - the FTB will straight murder your ass and don't feel sorry about it. They are vicious and aren't governed by nearly as much regulation as the IRS, so they get away with a ton of stuff the IRS couldn't dream of doing.
I'm not kidding: the FTB will ruin your life.
If people really did pay use taxes then internet purchases would suddenly be a lot less attractive. I mean, a big part of the allure of online shopping is no sales tax (which the shipping costs tend to make up for).
