I need some help with my garden.?

I have just moved in to a new house with a west facing garden, the house had been unoccupied for a little while and when I moved in the back and front lawns where sitting at about 2 foot high, after chopping away at it, I found there to be very little grass and a lot of moss/weeds, I have raked out the majority of moss and planted new grass seeds maybe a month ago.

my issue now is that the weeds are far out growing the grass and i don't want to cut the lawn yet, for fear of harming the new grass seedlings.

this problem is compounded by the fact that there is huge cracks all over the garden presumably made by neighbours' trees preventing the lawn from holding any water at all (literally, we had a huge downpour and the next morning the ground was solid as rock again).

i am really at a loss as to what i can do to help this garden, I am willing to be patient and am expecting that I will not get a quality lawn until at least next season.

just some advice on the drainage problem and the weed/moss that's remaining would be much appreciated. Thanks

from my experience cutting the lawn more often stops the weeds from spreading, you wont harm the new grass by cutting it cause cutting it forces it to flourish better and if you do leave it for long enough its like an open invitation for weeds to grow and leaving it to overgrow will damage the new grass becuase the weeds and moss 'strangle it' by blocking out much light for the grass blades underneath. i think you could benefit maybe using a 'weed and feed' lawn fertiliser such as Evergreen Complete 4 in 1 or After-Cut, relatively inexpensive to buy from any garden centre, diy or high street shops selling garden products. you wont need to wait til next year as if you keep the lawn damp until the granules soak in you may well have a nice green lawn within a fortnight or so. hope that helps ;-)

You can mow over where you seeded and it will be fine. Grass seed germinates in just a week or two. 6 weeks after putting down seed put some weed and feed down and that will make the grass grow and kill the weeds. Slowly water your yard everyday till the dirt stays moist. It may take a week or two but if you water it everyday then it will come around.
