You let air into the line, air is compressible fluid is not.
To BLEED the brake;
Squeeze the brake pedal and turn the little valve on top of the brake caliper where the hose goes in, air comes out,close the valve and repeat until only fluid comes out.

Whenever you remove a hydraulic brake line you must bleed the air bubbles when you put it back together. If you have air in the brake lines you will have no brakes.

There are a few different ways you can do this.

Here is a simple way.

You will need a very small diameter clear hose, a small plastic container, and a bottle of brake fluid. Make sure the brake fluid matches your manufacturer's requirements. Usually either DOT3 or DOT4. It also helps if this brake fluid is fresh.

Open your brake reservoir. Remove all of the old brake fluid. Fill to the top with fresh brake fluid.

Add about 1 inch of brake fluid to your plastic container.

On your brake caliper there will be a bleeder screw. Looks like a small nut with a nipple.

Attach your hose to the nipple of this bleeder screw. It must fit securely and not leak.

Place the other end of the hose in the bottom of the brake fluid in your container. The end of the hose must remain submerged in the brake fluid at all times. If the end if the hose is not submersed in brake fluid you could suck air back into the caliper.

Open the bleeder screw. Pump the brake pedal slowly. Air will be bled from your brakes. Keep an eye on the brake fluid level in your brake reservoir. Do not let it go empty or you will only put air back in your brake lines. Continue to pump the brakes until no more bubbles come from the hose connected to your bleeder screw and the brake fluid is clear.

Close the bleeder screw. Top off your brake reservoir and reinstall the cover.

You should now have a firm brake pedal. If any brake fluid leaked onto the brake disk clean with some brake cleaner sprayed onto a rag.
